Non boaty question but I know that good advice is allways available on this forum, whatever the subject.
Taking my autogas car from Cherbourg to La Rochelle next month and I wonder about the availabilty of Autogas on this route, also is there an adapter required for French gas?
Anyone converted a petrol boat engine to run on gas? economy must be good but what of safety and how does one get gas to boat?

recommend you go to the mobo forum, and talk to solitaire, he got fed up with LPG and converted to diesel - there was an article by him in PBO a few months ago.

Dont know how you think that LPG is good for economy, as normal mpg is less with LPG, it just costs a lot less. Economy is diesel.

I know several people that have had conversions, and everyone of them has had problems. You get gas to the boat by going to a fuel pontoon that sells gas. There has been some controversy around this area, as Calor were pushing marine gas, and promising that there would be more and more marinas and ports supplying gas, which led many to take the leap and have the conversions done. Then Calor closed several outlets citing lack of demand - result, a few very pissed off boaters!

gas is cheap because the government has decided not to whack road fuel tax on it yet. if gas power ever really takes off you can be sure they will up the tax as they did with diesel.

Used to run my old Rangie on LPG and found that most petrol stations in FRANCE sell gas, can't remember if I needed any filler mods but check with your local conversion agent, but pretty sure that the connectors are now universal. Have a good trip.

This link will show you what adaptor you need for France - http://www.iwemalpg.com/LPGstations.htm

I just sold an lpg converted Transit and bought a new diesel one. The new one costs marginly more to run but only needs a fill up once a fortnight instead of about twice a week.

there are quite a few dual fuel boats around now .... so it must be worth it - paricularly if you not in UK ...

In Baltics - gas is popular in a lot of cars and the fitting I am told is ame as in Europe .... so I am led to believe that it may be a common fitting now.

My factory fitted bi-fuel Volvo came with two types of LPG adaptors which have not moved from their space in the glove compartment since I got the car almost two years ago.
I would think these would be readily available, though, for peace of mind.
Regarding economy, with LPG at around 36, per litre I can't understand the logic of the argument that diesel at 83p-odd is cheaper.
I share the concern about Mr. Broon's plans for excise duty on LPG. At the moment the CO2 emmission relief on LPG is only worth -1% of manufacturer's list price on the tax for company cars which is hardly an incentive. However, even if we get another year of concessions it will be worth considering LPG.
Auto gas has been pretty good for me with no loss of performance. It has meant thinking ahead about fill-ups, but not a huge problem as the petrol tank is a standard 60 litre anyway. One gripe is the LPG tank is small at only 40 litres, so for 98% LPG running it means more frequent fills.
I do know one bi-fuel car user who fills up from his home domestic heating LPG tank and reckons his road fuel works out at under 23p a litre. This is perfectly legal.
Having seen some ropey conversions of cars I would be wary of going for anything but a factory job but if I had a petrol guzzling mobo with space for an additional tank it would be a must. There again, my marina has an LPG point. If red diesel goes the economy differential between marine diesel and LPG will widen enormously.
