As specified in the manual the planned mounting location of the EV-1 (Heading Sensor) and P70S Autopilot Controller) is more than 1m away from any source of magnetic interference and cables. However, the EV01 and P70S are in the same space, about 10 cm between them.

I am wondering if the proximity of the P70S to the EV-1 will be an issue? I do have a second option for mounting the EV-1 but it is much further away.

Any advice would be appreciated to help me decide.

Thanks,

The EV1 installation manual states (page 56) 'Location must be at least 1m. away from any sources of magnetic interference such as compasses and electrical cables' they do not specifically dictate a clearance with the P70. and it has cables. You would imagine they would if it was an issue. The quotatation reads like one of those cover all, get out clauses, how many locations on a boat are 1m. away from electric cables. I would still try for a bit more separation though if it was easy but since the EV1 should be easy to move again if your backbone cable is long enough why not try it? Surprised you are having trouble finding a spot though, the EV1 can be mounted upside down, sideways etc. so it is usually easy to find somewhere in an empty void like under a coaming or in the top or back of a locker.

Thanks Quandary. Indeed, I am going to try it and see. The EV-1 and P70S are being mounted in the space vacated by the Neco Autopilot controller. The space already has various redundant Neco cables run into it, which will be used to mouse through the backbone, as well as being in the right location for the cockpit and access to the back of the controller and EV-1. In a way it is a very easy installation. With the two Raymarine items being so close, I just wondered if there would be an issue, maybe found by others who install. Regarding moving the EV-1 further away, there are lots of spaces about, with various degrees of dismantling to run cables. The SeaTalk kit that came with the package is also just long enough to do the job as currently planned.

Both devices should be mounted away from compasses. The controller should be at least 0.8m from any compass, i'd assume that to include the EV-1.

The P70 installation book mentions in the general warnings section to locate somewhere that is at least 3ft (1m) away from a magnetic compass.

Regards electrical cables, I had a boat with a Simrad 9 axis sensor on that every time the Port alternator started to output current over 30A, swung the whole thing 180 degrees! He had it on auto pilot when he found this out and nearly deposited in his underwear from his recollection of the event!

Moved it and problem solved. Story is small cables generally won't cause an issue but bigger stuff could potentially. Similar to why data cables run x-over power for example.

I found the information below the on Raymarine Forum. Of interest is the http://www.gemeco.com/apps.php which is an App that can be used to detect magnetic fields. One area that the Raymarine Forum has identified is the cockpit shelf which is just above the area being considered. The shelf could potentially hold phones, iPads, tools and ferrous stuff.

Based on the information I will move the EV-1 sensor from the planned location.

Thanks everyone.
