There is a linguistic prob going on here. To the British flip flops are bits of rubber you wear on your feet at the side of the pool. A thong is something your girlfriend wears which may or may not make her decent at the beach. Probably the latter.

beware when you visit england... don't ask for thongs in a shoe shop, don't ask for durex in a stationers. i'm sure there are others.

of course it's the americans who have the most trouble, try walking down the street in new york in vest and pants. also they prevent mistakes with a rubber while we correct them with one.

Yes we have sharks, stingers, snakes, spiders, crocodiles, wild dogs, pigs, horses and camels, and all bite.

But the fact is; after more than 40 years of exposure I have been bitten once, and that was a red back spider, no biggie.

I have dived with sharks and stingers but never been bitten, or even threatened: I have seen many snakes, well over 50 to date, but never been bitten, 99% of them were heading away from me when spotted, and more than 50% were not venomous, they are not all aggressive and will do their best to get away from you. Spiders do a good job on flies and mosquitoes, will attack you if you leave them alone, I was bitten when I ran my hand around the inside of an old tyre without looking first, it was not a painful bite, but required an antidote to prevent side effects, few if any adults have died from red back bites.

The bottom line here is that we live with the wildlife rather than try to wipe it out, sure there is a risk you 'might' be bitten at some stage, but you have more chance of getting killed or badly injured on the road than being taken out by the wildlife, and our road statistics are no better / worse than yours.

I'm sure it's a question of exposure, when we first moved to the mid east coast in Oz I had a real problem with the huge cane toads that covered the lawns at night, now I don't even think about them till it rains and start calling to each other as they are right now, its just a reminder that you are living in the tropics.

I recently saw a programme on those Cane Toads, Gezzs there a big problem for Aussie? I think it was basically saying that unless you can stop them they maybe the only living animal in Aus in the future.

we do call "flip flops", thongs...you all had me worried for a while.. knew about the " durex" and the " rubber" ..made the latter mistake in London once...
