Not footie related.
A friend en-route Fiji to Bundaberg, has heard that new regulations require visiting yachts to be hauled out on arrival.
As this is a big ferro boat it could prove expensive.
Can any Aussie friends confirm if this is fact or rumour?
We were hoping to meet up with them & cadge a sail.[or should that be bludge? my strine is a bit rusty]

It is not new. There are certain ports that have infestation problems and require you either to prove that the boat was lifted/antifouled recently or have an inspection. Darwin inspected every boat with divers. The following quote from noonsite will hopefully help you discover the truth.

"Black Striped Mussel: An infestation of this marine pest was discovered in Darwin marinas in 1999 and successfully eradicated, with further infestations discovered on a foreign fishing vessel in 2000. Visiting yachts wishing to enter a Darwin marina should contact the marina lockmasters for the latest situation as yachts from overseas which have not previously hauled out/antifouled in Australia may have to have their hulls inspected. For more information, see http://www.nt.gov.au/dpif/fisheries/environ/environ.shtml"

Try here , or here .

I believe, tho not 100%, that if you arrive really hanging with growth, that you can be ordered to haul out at a quarantine site and have a scrub carried out - at your expense!!

Might pay to clean the boat up a bit prior to arrival!

All the best

New federal biofouling legislation came into effect beginning of October affecting yachts, I believe (they claim it is a world first but has been in effect here in NZ for quite a number of years) - if you arrive with a boat that does not meet biosecurity requirements (eg has growth on it) then you are likely to be required to have the boat lifted and cleaned at your cost.

That being so I think the states, especially the tropic ones, have done inspections if a concern for some time.

There is also some attention to boats around the coast here in NZ and I believe will be the same in Australia. In our own marina boats are occasionally surveyed (diver, at no cost) for exotic weed/critters and we sometimes get left pamphlets with a picture or two of some current concerning weed/critter on it to watch out for. Also occasional surveys as to sailing habits, frequency of cleaning, etc (even got a t-shirt for doing one of those /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif.

I have to say NZ are very good at this sort of thing. Pack dirty walking boots in a plastic bag in suitcase. They will take them and return them 10 minutes later sparkling clean with no mud or stains on them. Superb service, and I can recommend it to anyone. Expensive way to get your boots clean, but they do a very good job of it.

Nation of boot cleaners we are /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif.

Another example that I forgot to mention is all growth is regularly cleaned off our marina structures (our one anyway) to control the establishment of exotic species.

I must ship Iditarod over there. If they do the same service on boats that they do on boots, it will be well worth it. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Sort of the same subject -
I've just left Aussie on a boat, rescueing a NZer from the 'Dark side' /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

One thing I noticed this time that I've not seem before is the masive amount of border control. Chatting to the Aussie Customs guys we were told they are now prosecuting any boats that arrive without giving the required notice which I think is 96 hours BEFORE arrival. The morning we cleared out they had nabbed 2 boats coming in for that reason. I would heavily suggest everyone watches this.

Into NZ you have to give 72 hours but we got over flown by an Orion about 450mls out and then a smaller aircraft while coming down the coast and then again a Navy Patrol craft at the enterance to the Bay of Islands. All had Customs people on board and radioed us asking 'where from, where too and etc'. We gave them our call sign and every one came back with the boats name i.e they had computors and were tracking us. When we arrived in opua the Customs man told us what time we cleared Customs in Aussie and what time we pasted Seaway Tower i.e entred the open ocean.

I was told yesterday the same is happen off Aussie as well.

They are very much on the case out there, at the moment anyway. Maybe Ben Lardin is trying to sneek in by yacht?

"Also occasional surveys as to sailing habits, frequency of cleaning, etc (even got a t-shirt for doing one of those ."

That's a new slant.

Been there, scrubbed the boat, got the T- shirt.
