Audio Books

Do they work on an iPad? SWMBO listens to talking books on an old tape recorder but it is not that easy to acquire new tapes, if she could use her iPad that would give more voices.

Talking books are great. Some years ago I had shingles, which affected my eyes, and I couldn't stand the light. Even daylight through closed eyelids was torture. There I was, in a darkened room, pedalling on an excercise bike, and listening to talking books. It wasn't a good time.
The only problem I found with talking books was, that if you nod off, the recording keeps playing, and you have an awful job finding the place again.:D

Probably, mp3 and ipod, pod cast I don't use an ipad. I burn them off on cd or use an mp3 player or now my phone. Most are in chapters so you can skim back to find the correct place if you nod off. It's nice to read/hear the fist hand accounts of the Bounty by Capt Blye.

Hi Graham hope you are well.
Interesting subject as I would be prone to sea sickness if reading on choppy waters. this sounds like a good alternative. Do know if there is an app for your link, or can they be downloaded to an android phone?
Hope all ok down by!
No doubt we will cross paths in the yard soon.

I listen to free talking books from libravox on my smart phone, the are in chapters and stop if you nod off. Sailing alone around the world is my fav at present, but Tom Sawer is just behind.

The link I posted are libravox recordings, but better sorted so you can brouse easer.

Hi Eamonn I'm no techy I asume you can treat the mp3's as an LP and use a playlist (just got the phone, will take a while to sort out how to do it). Maybe centar1 could give some tips?

ps thanks for not critersising my spelling, I know how hard it is for some of you.(dislexic, no spell checker on laptop)

This is my main etertaiment when solo sailing. No or less sea sickness. You can keep a look out. And with acess to the local libery and http://www.booksshouldbefree.com/ free. I often pick two I think I would like and one random choice (chick book, kids, crime).
Great link, thanks for posting.

You may find radio podcasts interesting - drama, documentaries, humour .... here: http://radioarchive.cc/index.php

Before I set off for my summer afloat I load my MP3 player with a vast store to listen to on board, when the light fades at anchor somewhere in the Adriatic it saves on precious power needed for Kindle reading - not to mention that my old eyes are too tired to focus after a hard sailing day.

No techy either but heres how it works on my Nokia N8 android phone.
Download from www, libravox.org. the recording is stored in the mass memory of the file manager. Open downloads, open the recording, select the chapter and relax.
Didn, t know it helps with seasickness, don, t suffer myself but it would have been handy on a rough crossing to the IoM. Never going out with rookie crew in bad weather again.

Current "library" extends to 897 books - impossible to carry around in Kindle
Why? I have a couple of hundred books - mostly out-of-copyright classics so free for the download - on my Kindle and Amazon claim some 3'500 for the Kindle 3 : http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002Y27P3M/ref=cm_cd_asin_lnk

Edit: Right, you mean audio, which is the thread theme. Too early for brain to be in gear. I don't normally associate Kindle with anything other than text.

Have used mp3 audio-books, uploaded from DvD to external HDD and then listened to either on mobile phone or computer for the last 5 years from this source:-

Current "library" extends to 897 books - impossible to carry around in Kindle or as paperback (on a 31' boat) and not a large capital outlay.

I had a look at the site. Too good to be true springs to mind. Are they legal copies?
