Audi A4 estate obviously NB

I've got a 1.9tdi Sport Saloon Audi A4 and love it, 50mpg+ on long runs and about 40 about town, only needs filled up every 600 miles, which for me is great, I hate filling up. Have tried the BMW 3series, the Merc C and C class coupe, the Volvo S60, the Jaguar X Type, the Mondeo top of the range, The Vectra top of the range, ermmmm, and some others, and decided on the A4, there is a new model, well a facelifted model coming out January so if you don't mind an old model some good deals should be on at the mo, I will be looking with interest at the new A4 when it comes out for me next car or will it be the new BMW 5 series, ain't tried the un yet............... Hmmmmmm

hmmmm - the Honda and Peugot are really low tax - 150-160 co2 and Eu4; can't get much cheaper.
The Rover is low Co2 (163?) but not Eu4 so around 4-5% higher tax charge
All above ignores purchase price of course..haven't got time to do all that having just done it for myself.
SWMBO was insisting on Auto - hence the A4 got a big leap as it's auto figs are as efficient as the manual.

Nobody's mentioned the Volvo V70 - as the V50 is a bit small, and if you choose the model carefully it's about the same price (as the V50). There aer a few Bi-Fuel and LPG's about which will give you near petrol performance at Diesel prices.

Re: crap tracker

yeah, bit rubbish really, praps i shd go for the decent stuff so i can track it on the puter meself, and we cd all have a nite out, nick the car back, then razz it down the motorway whilst still "nicked".

they found it satruday nite, toldus bout it suday late pm, i went potty, them saying the fijngerprints need taking, then nobody knows who nicked it, so erm here's yer car. They cd've searched summink/somewhere for all the missing cd's and handbag stuff i think...

Re: tracker?

Years back a mate of mine's neighbour had his brand new caravan nicked off the drive at 4am, he had it back by 8am the same day - tracker? No - just plod by the side of the M6 who thought it was a bit "odd" that the gleaming white 'van was being pulled by a knackered Montego estate......he pulled it on the offchance (I think they used to call it "suss"/forums/images/icons/smile.gif) and bingo!

Technology eh, can't beat (enough), experienced coppers in cars, beats cameras hands-down!

Re: crap tracker

Hmm wd still be interested in tracker's explanation of why the system didn't work till saturday nite. I mean, it shuda worked even if you didn't have the fandango GPS version

Police are useless in these cases. They may not be able to do much but would make us feel better if they at least looked like they were trying. We were burgled a few years ago and for a variety of reasons we knew who did it, a well known local criminal, we even knew his address. But they did nuthin becuase couldn't take our word for it. So I gave em a list of stolen gear incl some serial numbers and said go round see if this is in his house. They still wouldn't. So he got off scot free. And later there was a truly pathetic ending - the burglar was on another job at night or summink, wearing black gear not bright yellow reflectives, as they do I suppose, and was run over at a road junction and killed. Sounds like an episode from Brookside i know but sadly it's true......

Re: tracker?

Yeah well that just goes to show, what is needed in the criminal world is consolidation, mergers and acquisitions, horizontal integration, investment bankers. If the caravan gang had merged with the tcm gang they would have towed the caravan with a gleaming E55 merc, so the copper wouldn't have pulled em, and if he had the cop car wouldn't have been able to catch them. QED. Dozy criminals.

Am I missing something here ?

I am amazed!!! He we all are discussing the economy and fuel consumption of cars, when we all own boats, that can drain a bank balance in minutes!!!

Have a mondeo diesel estate as a company car, gives close on 50 mpg. Had a new vectra diesel for a month before that, preferred the vectra. Driven Peugeot 406, wouldn't want one, been told the new Honda Accord diesels good but haven't driven it
Driven the new A4 with the 2.0FSI engine, had it on loan for couple of days, very comfortable but bit tight for room in back, gave close on 50mpg, tho it wasn't being thrashed. Certainly not as roomy as mondeo. A6 might be better as has euro4 2.0tdi engine and is bigger

I have just gone through the same thing.
At the moment I have the Passat 1.9SE TDI Estate.

I wanted something of the same size or larger.

I looked at the A4, one of the guy's here has one.
I could not get as much in it as I can in the Passat.
The A4 has a nicer trim level, fuel eco about the same.

So I spent a good few weeks looking at all the estate cars and mini MPV's.

I have gone for the Renault Grand Senic 1.9TDI.
Has a little less power than my Passat but is huge!
Got every toy an option bar Leather and Sat Nav (already have a PDA for that)

Came in under budget too (boss very happy!)
So I get...

Metalic paint
Alloy wheels
6 stack RDS CD with remote on steering wheel.
Cruise cont
Panoramic sunroof
Air con
Chilled glove box
Keyless entry
Folding door mirrors
7 seats
More hidy holes that you can shake a stick at
Rear door blinds
a cuddly toy and a fondu set (ooppps lost the plot there)

Oh and a really Gucci big red start/stop button!!
Sorry thats the motor racing nutter in me!

But loads of kit.
Good value for money.

Just have to see how I feel in 3 months time!

Regards

Keyless Entry

Beware. I saw an article in the papers this morning about a guy in France, in a Renault, whose cruise control apparently got stuck on the Autoroute and who was forced to drive a couple of hundred kilometres at 120mph before he managed to disengage it. Apparently he thought of cutting out the ignition, but couldn't because he had keyless entry and ignition and couldn't disable the card.

Well, that's what he told les Flics, anyway /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Would tend to agree, but we seem to be applying different logic to that one.....then again, I am driving a good old Jag V12 which also could drain the bank balance in a relatively short time....

Well that was a very interesting read, some good points to make and lots to consider. I cant reply to everyone individually but here are a few replys to go on with.

AJW & Mike 21 - Yes I thought of mondeo, having run a focus est with no problems to speak of
TCM - I kinda like your outlook to life :-)
Littleship - Thanks but I have this hang up on Renault, Peugeot, Fiat and Citroen
Oh and Volvo.
Britemp - My company so I will buy and run.

Just spent 3 hrs to get back from N. Wales. 1hr hardly moving in jam on m6 so another criteria is Automatic. Oh and I like the sound of the geisha girl as well.

I looked at the A4, and my then 10 year old couldn't fit behind me (I'm 6'3"). Then went for a drive in the A6 and it felt like a barge.

So I bought the car I really wanted, despite all the warnings, an Alfa 156 2.0 Sportwagon with the Selespeed gearbox.

2 years on, I still enjoy every mile and it hasn't gone wrong, not once. Dreadful fuel economy, no real room in the boot, but plenty for 5 passengers. Selespeed is auto if you want, buttons or stickshift if you don't. Got mine from Motorpoint and saved about £6k from list. Cheap car.

Now let's hear it from all those people who've "got a mate that had one and it spent more time in the bl**dy garage than on't road". But before you do respond, be prepared to back it up!

<hr width=100% size=1>

Are we talking motorpoint at Burnley per chance. Oh and thanks for the input. Incidentally I really like Alpha's

Re: Am I missing something here ?

having just got rid of a company car that was costing me more in tax a year than the running costs of my boat (including fuel, moorings etc) - and it only had a 4 cylinder engine not a V8 - I think it is a hugely relevant subject!
