Auction of boats from EISCA.

She looked in pretty good nick, and still had all spars, oars and a couple of harpoons. Interesting to see that you could choose between a rudder and a sweep steering oar.

Rudder was used for sailing, while steering oar was for rowing during final approach of the whale.

Any idea if she was sold to private owner or to a company, and if she will stay in the UK?

I would be very interested to make an arrangement with the buyer and try to return her to the Azores.

I looked, I bid, and I got what I wanted. All I have to do now is change the bearings on the Firefly's combi trailer and drive to Scotland with it...

Actually almost all the lots sold. Including the head of the HERZOGIN CECILIE's capstan, for loadsamoney...

Update:

In her prime (photo courtesy of John Tough):

As found in Eyemouth:

At the end of the long tow down the A1., etc., from Eyemouth to Woolverstone:

Scraping the outside:

(Note presence of slave labour force)

First coat of varnish:

The teak graving piece glued into the Honduras mahogany hog:

Fifteenth coat of varnish:

Now working on the inside...

Well done you. Old wooden boats to me are like elephants. Nice to look at, but I wouldn't want to own one. I am, however, glad that someone else does, and to see it come back to its former glory is brilliant. :encouragement:

I had this one for twelve years: (current owner's photograph)

followed by this one for twenty eight years:

And then I went plastic and Bermudian:

so I needed a little wooden boat to care for!
