Au revoir!

Forumites all,
After several years and more than a few postings and probably even more PMs, it is with a touch of sadness that I must announce that I can longer frequent the Forums in an “official” capacity. With the publication of the Ofcom IS codes we are no longer able to subscribe to public Forums with official Ofcom IT kit.

I will still be on from time to time in a “private” capacity from home but this will be far less frequent. Questions and queries can still be addressed to me, although they must now come only through “official” channels.

If anyone has a question that they want/need answered and they think Ofcom can help the email address is MAAT@ofcom.org.uk or telephone via the Ofcom Contact Centre on 0845 456 3000.

Mike

That sounds like normal official progress - if officially OFCOM cant listen to criticism, then obviously there isnt a problem that they have to deal with!

Shall be sad that you are no longer able to clarify official positions in the same manner that we have become used to.

Am I alone, or is this another example of barking madness from the government

Mike,

Very, very sad to see that you have to give up your useful and informative posts. It's not very often that 'ordinary' folk can get helpful advice from 'Government'

I will miss your banter and information.

Yet another example of an Open Government door being slammed shut in our faces. I suppose your "service" will be replaced by yet another list of FAQs saying precisely nothing but the obvious..

Thanks,

Stop what you're doing and wait my signal

You will be missed, your posts have been very informative and have in a number of instances actually changed peoples' opinions.

What email address should we write to, (i.e. someone in charge who will listen,) to register our disapproval of this move and to lobby for your re-instatement?

<hr width=100% size=1>

Sorry to hear that Mike, you will be missed.

Interestingly I suspect that the new policy is not legal. They are certainly within their rights to stop you contributing in an official capacity but as the law currently stands it is highly debatable whether they can restrict you from making "reasonable" use of the IT equipment for personal purposes.

This is another example of how daft rules and regulations are inhibiting real life. I do not agree that we should have to pay for VHF use but conceed that you have made a reasonable case for payment and your attitude and help will have perhaps made some folk pay up when they would normally not do. Thanks for your usefull contributions to the forum. How do you put up with working in a Government Department? It would drive me mad! Good Luck. Paul

Well there we go with Tony Blair's now well and truly downgraded 'Freedom of information' so that it lies in the gutter.

Over the past few years you have kept us informed of what is happening and what is about to happen. Airwaves hasn't been as informative.

I think that it's sad that you are being gagged.

I think that what's sadder is that we the taxpayers are paying idiot politicians and even more idiot civil servants to allow the gagging process to increase.

Never mind, we can always find out what's going on in the UK by going to the open access CIA site in the USA.

Sorry to see that you can't use the forum officially any more - this does seem a little shortsighted. You have certainly been able to answer a lot of queries over the last few months, but hopefully we'll still hear from you in your 'private' capacity.

I'd rather be sailing... :-) /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

A very short sighted move on Ofcom's part!

Is it worth complaining to them (maybe officially via Kim?), or is this practice set in stone?

What a shame! Your contributions have been a model of the human face of Open Government, and an object lesson in how to contribute effectively in an official capacity without falling into the traps such forums can create (despite the baiting, of which I admit to having played a part).

Hope you will be able to continue in a private role.

I think this is a great pity.
I never did post on your issues but learnt a hell of a lot.
Many thanks.

Ready for going back home to my mistress and SWMBO of course !!!

I too will be sorry to see you go.

I can understand the restrictions, and suspect that the process for getting an exemption is not worth the effort on your part.

As others seem to suggest it would surely be appropriate if someone were to be formally tasked (not MI5!) to scan the forum world for relevevant content but suspect that gettign that added to your job description would be as hard as a meaningfull title/forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Enjoy the rest!

What a pity. You have said a lot that helps me to understand the regulations and their context. OFCOM should positively support this education.

I'm very sorry to see you go. Your comments & help have always been the best advertisement for Offcom & the fools decide to stop you. I hope you won't make your private visits too infrequent.

If only the powers that be in Offcom could realise the stupidity of their actions.

Sorry to see you go.
The government and all it's associated agencies should realise that "two way" communication achieves more than edicts issued.

I think you were a brave man to have come on the forum in the first place in such an open and honest way.

I may not agree with everything you say but certainly have a lot of respect for someone not afraid to stand up and be counted.

I write a short article in All At Sea, for those who do not receive this waterfront tabloid, it is just that, published monthly. I would like to print verbatim the comments which have been made about the excellent service you have given us. I have only been using the forum for about 8 months, and I find it informative, educational, highly amusing at times and one of the best ways of learning about something one may know little of, and quickly. Your departure is our loss and the sailing fraternity's loss as well. Are you happy for me to publish?
