Can't figure out how to comment on the article about hull materials at present, as they really don't like steel or wood. Wood I agree is problematic, but steel is not. The main issue when buying second hand is to make sure you look inside the bilges for signs of corrsion. Steel boats like my old Van Der Stadt 34 rust from the inside out. In Dichas case, it was the inside of the fin keel and the anchor locker bottom. It was impossible to clean up the inside of the keel due to the design with all the different sections protruding into the bilge area. It was already rusting when I purchased that boat for a circumnavigation, and after 3 years going around, it was a terminal case, so I sold her to a Spanish chap.
That seriously problematic corrosion was partly dealt with by me building an inner blige and filling the dry bottom of the bilge area with gash paint and thick used oil. I made a good job of that, BUT I failed to seal up the inside of the anchor locker with new galvanised or stainless plates as a liner. The initial problem is the original owner should have insisted on far thicker epoxy primer in both areas, and the gas locker to prevent rust. He also agreed to using 4 rather than 6mm Cortron steel plate. Tough enough, but thickness is important in corrosion resistance terms.
The Van Der Stadts are first class designs, BUT when a yard does the initial build be careful about the sandblasting and primer jobs.

Picture below reminds me why I went, it's the BIG BLUE!
