Attaching stack pack to boom

Just bought a new loose footed main and when I came to take off the old sail I found the Stack Pack was sowed (sowen?)
to the foot just above the bolt rope. Acting with my usual undue haste I unpicked the stiches and seperated the 2 halves of the pack from the sail, then realised I could have left the bolt rope attached and cut the old sail away, which is truly knackered, and been able to leave the stack pack undisturbed.
My options now are getting a sailmaker to attach a new bolt rope and join the 2 halves or attach each half to the boom independently by rivets or such like. As I can do the latter myself can anyone advise if this is a viable option?
Cheers
Andy

If I understand your query correctly the original stack pack was sewn to the sail which had a bolt rope at the foot, engaged in the groove on top of the boom. My own sail bag (to which the lazy jacks are attached) is fitted to the boom with a bolt rope, whilst the sail itself is loose footed. This is the way to go. Drilling the boom and riveting things to it is surely harder than sewing the two halves of your sail bag together and sewing in a bolt rope. You can do this by hand, or with a sewing machine to join the halves, followed by hand sewing to contain the bolt rope. Having done this you will be able to remove it for winter storage when the sail is off, or for cleaning.
P.S. The word you were seeking is "sewn".

If you cannot sew in a new bolt-rope (not easy if you have not done it before) just sew the two parts together, fold the edge over and sew again. Then fit brass eyelets evry foot and a half or so. Very easy to do and not expensive.
Get some sliders (slugs) that fit in the groove on top of the boom and secure these to the eyelets.
You can even avoid the use of eyelets by sewing the sliders directly to the edge of the cover. Do this loosely with synthetic twine, in the same way as a button is sewn to a coat.
Either way, it is quite straightforward.
Good luck.

Hi

Would you need to sew the bolt rope into the stack-pack? On my last boat it wasn't sewn in. Sew your two halves together, find the fight size line for the bolt rope and thread it into the boom groove at the same time as the stack-pack. It can't fall out once in place?
If you leave the old sail intact, it will always do as a spare in an emergency!!!

I intend to make my own stackpack and have been looking on the internet for ideas and materials, I have found on this website http://www.sailcloth.co.uk/ "luff tape" which I intend to use in the boom on my loose footed main sail.
I intend to phone them before ordering because there are no pictures on there site and this tape may not be what I think it is !

Point North in Holyhead also have good range of stuff, they also supply a leaflet showing how to make boom bags. Not too clear but one or two useful ideas.

Safe sailing
