Interested in a used example of the Atlantic 38. I know about the current makers, Imperial Motor Yachts, but does anybody know the background of this John Bennet hull. What is/was the Haines connection? I'm looking for a good sea boat which still handles well on the occasional upriver trip. Anybody got one? opinions??

The 38 hull runs back to the Humber and Princes models around the late 80's. It's strong and well designed. A good safe hull at sea giving a smooth and predictable ride. If you want the full story get in touch with John Bennet he has a keen interest in his boats and can answer any question you might ask including the specs of power train props etc. It'll go anywhere you want to go. Ours has been to the Canaries and the Med under her own steam.

I was close to buying an early 90's one (93 I think) about 3 years ago but opted for a Broom 37 instead.
It was the particular boat/ broker that put me off not the breed.

Did quite a lot of research.
First.
They have 2 different hull types available with the same superstructure.
1. is full planing, deep vee hull which with VP TAMD61A's (306hp) should do about 25 knots max'
2. is semi displacement. Usually fitted with quite small engines for displacement speeds, but can be fitted with larger ones for speeds in high 'teens.

Haines Marine are able to use the semi displacement hull only, and whilst still fitted out very nicely is not to the same standard as Holland Boats own Atlantic range. Neither is the price though!!

For use on rivers I would imagine the Haines semi displacement hull would be good.
Can I ask the name of the boat that has caught your attention and where it is based?

Thanks for that. Interestingly enough the broom 38 was another on my shortlist - may end up with one yet! Semi displacement with bigger engines, 200 to 250hp is the way I'm leaning. Got fed up with the behaviour of my last boat (planing) in tight corners. Absolutely nothing to do with my boat handling!

Just noticed I missed answering your question. It was Seamouse on the Thames. Apparently only 2 of the m were made so it's a 50/50 chance we are talking about the same boat. I'd be interested in your experiences.

The boat I looked at was 1993, for sale with Med-Sale and was in very poor condition.
Sea Mouse is a Haines 38 with the semi displacement hull and a pair of down rated Sabre Perkins 225hp which currently push out 185hp.
I must come clean here and admit that the current owners of Sea Mouse are friends.
The boat has been very lightly used, mainly on the non tidal Thames and is a lovely spacious and stable boat, which is part of the reason why they bought it.
The Sabre engines were downrated because the owners did not require the higher potential cruising speeds, but did want the option of increasing the power again if required.
It is very comfortable and would be ideal for someone wanting a boat suitable for both sea and river.
Good luck.

Mike, I don't think Sea Mouse has had a trip on the sea as yet. She's virtually like new.
