Hi
I have read about the new Atlantic crossing forum on the YM site.
Is anyone going? It looks quite cheap? Will it be any good?
Any feedback??

I posted on here on the same subject only a couple of days ago! Sorry I didn't see your post first.

The feedback I got was that it looks good value and that other forum type events at the Cruising Association have been very useful. This is being run by a company called Sailing Rallies and not the CA so I suppose it may have a different format but I think I'm going to go along as there look to be some good speakers. Hopefully see you there on 11-12 May to discuss all things transatlantic!

As an 'insider' at the Cruising Association I've heard the forum discussed in some detail and it sounds good. I shan't be there - afraid my attention span is too short to ever contemplate an Atlantic crossing. Even in a 747 I'm bored before we've got past Newbury.

Ah Twister_Ken, sounds like you need to get some other things to occupy your mind and soul whilst sailing - if the sound of nature isn't enough, you could take up music - we sang, played and danced our way across the Atlantic once!

I can confirm that the weekend will be great for anyone interested (interesting speakers, whilst staying clear of the sales pitches that often dominate these things) - 352S and ClaireW, please feel free to send me a private message or email if you want to know more. It would be good to meet you there.

A couple of years ago, we attended something similar organised by World Cruising Club (the ARC organisers).
The main message was that the ARC was the only way to cross the Atlantic.

It seems that this one is organised by Sailing Rallies.
Call me a cynic, but I would not be surprised to learn that the main message will be that Sailing Rallies are the only way to cross the Atlantic.

They will no doubt be encouraging the idea of crossing as part of a rally - and to be honest why not? For the intrepid lone explorer the idea of attending a weekend forum will probably not appeal anyway. Of course there does need to be genuine content, which it sounds as if there will be from their press release...

I have had some dealings with the team at Sailing Rallies and I have to say that I am very impressed! They were keen to learn about return options and were good at negotiating a discount for their members. As we often provide crew for trans atlantic crossings (assisted passages and fully crewed deliveries) I was delighted to help them. I can't help but notice that I wasn't invited to talk at the forum though: That in itself reassures me that they are VERY keen on ensuring quality of content over sales pitch ;-)

It is about time we had an alternative to the ARC and a bit of competition will surely help to ensure a better quality of event at a fair price...

Is anyone on here taking part?

Pete

So impressed that your logo does make an appearance on their rolling banner of ads

Maybe you just are a crap speaker? :p
Joking aside, I never had any intention to join the ARC but attended the World Cruising Club Atlantic Crossing seminar in the hope that I might learn something.
Was very disappointed when it turned out to be all sales pitch.
This one might be different, OTOH it might just be more of the same.

PS: also naturally suspicious when a new user's first post is about a venture with commercial undertones.

Suspicious or not, it's been quite a useful post for me as I asked the same question on the PBO forum and got nowhere near the same number of replies as this one!

Thanks for the feedback on the alternatives to this forum. Having now spoken to Sailing Rallies I was quite impressed with their attitude and I'm keen to learn, not buy stuff, so I think I'll give the ARC one a miss. I couldn't see anything on their website anyway.

Hi Guys,
This has been (mostly!) very useful.
I have booked my place and will report back.
I have been promised it will not be a sales pitch!

Went on the ARC one a couple of years ago , got a headache with the sales pitches and did not learn too much , did the crossing this year on a mates boat on our ownsome and it is a breeze , the ARC or other rallies will not help you much out there .......... just go for it , we saw 2 ships all the way across ......... the party side of things will happen when you get to the other end , that is all the rallies have to offer ...........

As far as I know there are only two ways to cross the Atlantic, by boat or plane ;)
