Can anyone recommend a decent tourist hotel near central Athens for a bit of sight seeing for a couple of days on route to Preveza pre season?

I've stayed in the "Parthenon View Hotel" which unbelievebably, actually has a view of the Parthenon.
Recommended.
 
Have a look on this site. We have stayed at a few hotels in Athens and each was different in cost and the surrounds. So your choice.

Last time I stayed in Athens, I booked the cheapest hotel I could find. I was lost trying to find it, when a helpful gentleman suggested I shouldn't walk any further in the direction I was heading, as it was a bad area. My hotel was right in the middle of this area: Omonia, the Pergamos Hotel was delightful. No problems with the area either.

Yeah I do an overnight on the way to Porto Heli as the flight's too late. Omonia no problem but my cheap hotel was not good. I'll have a look at Pergamos for next time...
 
I just returned , In Athens I stayed in Poseidon Hotel really nice, 3nts sea view 140 euros with massive breakfast , good restaurant and pool on seventh floor across from beach and marina , In Preveza stayed in the Preveza Hotel,,, well ok but old UK B&B feel 40 euros an night

While reading post #8 I was about to write the same but I see you beat me to it. For a one-night stay between flights this has to be the best possible place to stay. We have used it for the past two years, €80 for two people including transport from and to the airport. Taxi fares alone to central Athens would not be much different. Very comfortable and friendly place.

We have used it quite a few times over the years, so have our friends, there are some quite nice walks along country lanes to the sea, the area is safe at night and a ten minute walk to the Taverna. We use it if coming from Kefalonia on the ferry or crop sprayer in winter, then onto Madrid the next day. The Pick up from the airport has proved to be very reliable, no plastic cards needed to book, simply ring or email and pay when you arrive.
