Having a look at using the above for a Charter of a 43 Sun Odessey in September.
Last year we (Lads holiday) mobbed in and out of Kos with relative ease from the Norf, but Athens has been a bugger to get to.

As a result we are Sunday to Sunda Chartering - problematic but I have a good offer and am Googling opinion on the local firm.
They are mentioned in only one thread on here - highly recommended, but from 2002 .

Anyone got anything recent to say about them?
Oh and tips for a weeks running around in and out of Athens? We tend to do about 40-50NM a day.

Don't know about this firm ,but we're chartering from Athens in June using Nautilus, based in UK. They've also sorted the flights. We've used them many times and in fact booked a charter in Sweden with them this morning.

Sorry for delay in response - been travelling.

Yep know Nautilus, and have used them a few times and may still this time around but exchange rates and the fact they are sourcing local boats I am already looking at, I would be looking at a premium of £300 or more for the same boat(s) through them.

So, no one else heard or used them ?

No knowledge of the company but did a charter from Athens a couple of years ago. We went across to Agina and Poros and then round to Napvion (probably spelt incorrectly) with various stops along the way on a two week charter. Probably won't make that in a week but Agina (can be busy with limited mooring) Poros and Hydra (gets very busy with an interesting take on rafting) doable in a week. Fantastic cruising ground.

Fyly handled the Greece end of a Charter that we organized with a US company called sailingparadise.com. There was some breakdown in doing the Sunday-Sunday charter, as the operator expected the boat back in port on the Saturday, but Fyly put us up in a hotel, at no charge, so not much to moan about other than less time on the water. Also, they upgraded us to a newer better spec'd boat than we'd booked and paid for, so all in all we were happy.

Still think of it as one of the best charters we ever did.

But.... that was all in 2002, so not much help for current set up. Hopefully for you, it's still the same crowd behind it all.

Cheers, PT

Thanks for the above - I have asked for the paperworks to check through and will DOUBLE check the Sunday to Sunday content.

One company said they would do Sunday to Sunday, but on guarantee the week before

Any mor tips, spots, tavernas, anchorages are welcome as I got loads of good info from here before on Turkey !!

BOOKED !
:D

And jackpot it seems on picking Sunday to Sunday.
We fly in at noon, and the boat will be back in from Saturday (the day before) all cleaned and ready to have us aboard straight away.

I can send the Galley Steward ashore for the supplies ;) whilst two of us do the check out and we could be on our way by 4 or 5 that night.

Similarly the boat isn't due to go back out until the Tuesday after the charter so we don't have to race in to get off her.

Anyone know short distance hops / anchorages / harbours from Athens for these first and last nights ? 10NM or so from Athens ?

I know a few for the similar idea in Turkey (Osmans place outside Fethiye for example) but none around there.

Cheers

Paddy,
where are you picking up the boat? which Marina? theres a few, stretched along 10Km of coast!
a really really short hop, is to go north up to mikrolimano, just at edge of Piraeus, lots of nightlife, fish bars, and even yacht club of greece rooftop bar!
Let me know which marina, via here or PM and will have a chat with the tame port captains for god spots for you
cheers

That's great thanks

I believe we head out of KALAMAKI ALIMO Marina ??

I just Google'd Mikrolimano and that looks a handy little place - far better than stuck in a Marina !

As I mentioned, I have over the years robbed and pillaged many a Google Earth waypoints for Turkey and the Southern Greece islands, but only just now going to start the collection for this area.

Scouting around the Athens Area, all ports and harbour seem to just have huuuge MOBO's ! yet now where is close and off the beaten track.

Across to Aigina for the first night would be heading in the right direction......

All knowledge welcome !

I shall have a chat with SWMBO when she gets back tonight from airport, she will know of bars etc around saronik. To be honest, if you want a bar and nightlife at the end of every evening, at this time of year, you might be better staying in the saronik gulf, as the islands will still be pretty asleep!
www.meteo.gr is good for weather, but you only get english after you click on a 'weather point'.
If you want to venture further afield you could head down and get to cape sounio, which is amazing and might have some bars near it, good shelter if you tuck in behind the island, then jump down to a few islands. To be honest most of my sailing (chartering) here has been up 'north' or over at kefalonia, although will be fixing that (subject to survey) this week.
Will put up a post tomorrow after 'consulting' with SWMBO and the port captains at work (shipping company)
;-)
cheers

Thanks Ewan, but don't panic, no rush - we are not going until September :D

I sadly only get the chance to get on the water a few times a year and so I tend to get a little excited !!!

(although had a warming day on Sunday taking my Nephews aged 9 and 13 to our old sailing club for an open day and a run out in Wayfarers - soaking wet, they loved it !)

Anyway, back to Athens, I think the idea is to get ship shape asap and haul out of the Marina away from Town, and get to 'Greece'

We had a great week last year (same crew) battering around the Dodecanese, and look forward to more of the local life.
Undecided or open to whether we head East out towards Mykonos ( a personal goal of one of the crew) or loop down South West.
Last year and previous years we tended to rack up 50-60NM a day, and guess the same this year coming.

Cheers for the ideas so far.

I chartered a catamaran from Skiathos through Fyly in Sept 2010 - perfectly good firm, decent boat, well prepped, good handover and onshore support.

As for Athens, there's lots of interesting choices within an easy sail:

Aegina - nearest to Athens, with some nice bays for anchoring - perhaps lunch on last day?
Poros - lovely harbour and old town, watch out for ferry wash on the quayside
Hydra - jewel of a place, difficult harbour (crowded, fouled) but worth it to be there
Dokos - nice anchorages in several bays on smaller islands around here
Spetses - great harbour amidst traditional boat builders, nice old town, good bars.
Methana - near Poros, smelly (methane from volcanic springs) but interesting

It's one of my favourite sailing grounds of all, have been several times and lots to discover.

Enjoy!

I reread the OP and saw september, sorry, I am in Greek mode in which 3 days is a lot of advance preperation!
Alimos is ok, there is a supermarket near, other side of Tram tracks, and you can get ice at the shell garage just outside.
If you are after getting out of there fast, then I would head down to Sounio or Kea (if you can make it), then jump round the whole chain.
Paros is a good place to relax or have a serious party ( as in 4 am, shoes off dancing on the quay outside a bar). Mykonos is well within easy reach and Santorini.
Have a look at
http://www.jimbaerselman.f2s.com/
its the site of one of the forumites, and a lot of good information.

and I have about 4000 hours teaching in Wayfies and would have loved to get one here, am in south Eyvia Gulf so good for day sailing.
cheers

Same Same

Hi,

We did the very same thing in 2009, also in Sep. We used the shop near the marina for our provisions, but it would be worth checking what will be aboard when you take over. In hindsight we could have taken salt, pepper, herbs, tea, coffee etc with us in our luggage to cut back on things you need.

Day 1 headed off to Agina, which we loved so much we came back for our last night. Had 2 nights in Poros due to strong (F8+) winds and poor weather. Due to the inforced layover we caught a ferry to Hydra which worked out very nicely. Also stayed at Perdicka (sp) which was marvelous and probably the best small village we stoped at. We also had a night in the Kalimata marina, which wasn't too bad.

We used the Rod Heilkel guide and found it very usefull.

Hope you have a ball. We intend on going back, esp as Easy will fly direct to Athens in Sep from Edinburgh!

It's already a distant memory.
The Oceanis 43 was a cracker, straight out of the box with only 500nm on the log and sailed great, nice kit and such - as elsewhere mentioned I feel the Safety gear on Charter boats could do with being upgraded from "good enough to get coded" to actually "useful and wanted on board"

256NM in a week out of Athens and back. Great times, a day or two of serious weather (35kn, 3.5m seas) lots and lots of beers and laughs.
A couple of flaws to our planning - and glad we did not go for the original stretch of route down to Mykonos - it would of been a looooooong way home.

All that remains is to work out where next year? Croatia or back to Turkey ?
(I fancy some coastline hugging as opposed to the enforced distances / times of Island hoping)
