Tradition, based upon paper charts being expensive & precious items of knowledge - no plastic coatings way back then. Hence great care taken with them, which obviously includes a soft pencil (easier to erase & doesn't cut the paper fibres).

Damage or loss, could seriously spoil your day.

Ah well. Sadly tradition doesn't play much part in sailing any more. Otherwise we'd all be doing so dressed in peaked caps and ties.

This still can be achieved if you joined something like a Navy!

Actually, I once sailed overnight from Guernsey to the Solent with the crew wearing dinner jackets and bow ties. We had sailed the yacht belonging to HMS Dolphin across to Guernsey in an annual service race. We inevitably got stick for being the 'grubby submariners' at the prizegiving bash up at the castle. So we obviously decided to dress up.

Then, of course, out comes the bright idea of sailing out of the harbour still in DJ's. Then the next idea, first one that wimps out and changes buys the beer when we get back.

So, as it was still necessary to see customs on return, at something like 0900 we found the customs dory in lymington and the duty bloke was rather surprised to see a gaggle of shabby blokes in DJ's wanting to clear in and get some diesel.

Reversion to type, I suppose.
