Asgard II sinking in Biscay

[ QUOTE ]
As a professional sailor who has worked in square rig sailing training, I can say Asgard was a ship with one of the best records of maintenance. All MCA regulations were complied with,

Asgard was an Irish flagged vessel - WHY ON EARTH would she have to comply with the regulations of a foreign coastguard agency?? Not a very 'professional' sailor if you didn't know that the Asgard was flagged outside the UK....

I think you have just proved the point I was making to Fisherman. On board Asgard, everyone receives training before the vessel leaves port. It shouldn't be a surprise that everybody got into the liferafts OK, given the clear leadership so lacking when Maria Assumpta went down.

A fantastic rebuttal and well put...

My ineptitude comment was from a suggestion made to me by a current Irish tall ship professional sailor who has extensive experience in the industry both in the UK and Ireland.

If you care to point out where in the Dept of Transport that they have dedicated tall ship experience as they do in the MCA? Or when was the last time you accompanied a person from the Marine Survey Office around a tall ship during dry dock as my acquaintance has?

Asgard was solidly built and well maintained as I can attest to as I did an Irish Sea crossing in her in near gale conditions. But as said, all work was carried out in the republic where the tradition of timber shipbuilding is all but dead.

I agree, complete nonsense.
The ship was scheduled to be in La Rochelle for a week. That was arranged from November 2007 as part of her yearly program. Routine maintenance which was carried out 4 times per year on top of her annual 2 month maintenance schedule at the end of the working season.
I have never sailed on a Tall Ship that was as well cared for as Asgard II.

Well said Topsail Tom. I guess you missed your exciting voyage home to Winter Refit this year. You'll have to get back on the water soon. All that study has allowed the cob webs to build up. Fair Sailing.
