Light sheathing is often used in the US as quite a lot of the ply is prone to 'checking' Slight cracks in the first layer, leading to further probs in the other layers. Decent marine Ocuum ply on this side of the pond, doesn't seem to suffer the same probs. My Oughtred design has lasted 13 yrs with no probs. But the current build, a modified Sharpie, will be sheathed, as I have the cloth and (epoxy)resin., left over from another build.
As for succesfull ply builds, Jay Benford's range, including Annie and Pete Hill's Badger, seem to have done well..

Currently looking at a ply epoxy glass sheathed boat from 1976. Seems sound and all 3 surveys up to latest (2002!) found nothing amiss. Hopefully a new survey will say the same. Very different kind of boat from a Piver cat though.
