I see Arthur Beale are offering 15% off over the bank holiday on orders and I’m quite taken with the look of the Welsh wool pullovers but it states that the wool is in a raw state and smells of sheep. Not really sure I want the smell of sheep under my nose all the time, can anyone confirm this? Does it go after being washed? Thanks Rob

I have a proper Aran raw wool sweater bought from Yarmouth Supplies in the Plymouth Barbican. It smells of lanolin, not sheep.

Raw wool keeps you warm even when wet. Few other materials have that property.

Thanks, I’m aware of the properties of raw wool and the advantages, but I have seen it stated in several places that the Arthur Beale one smells of sheep, hence the question.

On the way to Iceland in the 1970s after involuntary swimming I took off most clothes and put wool next to skin: that and eating many Mars bars probably kept me alive.

In Iceland I bought a thick hairy fishermans woolen pullover, mittens and beanie hat. Fantastic warmth even when wet, in fact getting wet didn't much affect it's "keeping-warm-ability". But a bit scratchy to wear: you put up with it in very cold conditions and appreciate the warmth, but a few years later living in the tropics I'm afraid it all got binned.

I’ve got two of the Arthur Beale beerenberg sweaters, I’m wearing the ecru one as I type this on my ship, it is one of the most useful things I own. It does have a light smell, I’ve washed it once but it’s not offensive.

I’ve also got the dark brown one.

They’re tremendously comfortable, it’s a bit nippy on our aft deck this aft, and it’s snug there, come inside to the warmth and it’s not too warm.

I really can’t recommend them enough.

Thanks, that’s a useful reply
