Glucosamine

Glucosamine is a key ingredient giving joint cartilage its resilience. Taking it orally shouldn't work because the body promptly deaminates it, turning it to ordinary glucose. It is naturally made within the joint lining, not imported from outside. Nonetheless, I know an orthopaedic surgeon who says that if rubbing your knee with a wet herring makes it feel better, you should carry on doing it. It's a classic case of evidence-based medicine versus the placebo effect.

Re: Glucosamine

erm I also take it compounded with Chondroitin which I beleive is the bit that helps cartiledge?

Re: Glucosamine

Took our Woofy to the vet, 'tis ruptured ligament at his stifle and expensive op looms /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif.

Anyway, I asked her about glucosamine and animal joints and she said that she had been to a couple of seminars during which was mentioned as having some success but I got the impression she was not raving over it. Suprised me a bit as she had previously spoken about use of green lipped mussel extract as a natural remedy for building up various bit and pieces of broken Woofies, but there again that could have been 'cos she sold that. {Green lipped muscles are aqua farmed here in NZ for eating and and export, the extract is also sold for humans as supposed to be good for joints, tissue repair, you name it, etc }

I don't think Woofies sucumb to placebo "treatment" so any good effect observed could be scientifically relevant, though suspect Prof Ducabella's assessment is prob correct.

Didn't ask her about chondroitin sulphate 'cos I haven't worked out how to pronounce that yet /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif. Will do that next visit when paying the op bill - I think she has a big MoBo somewhere 'cos between Ships_Cat and House_Woofy we sure pay her enough to run one.

Re: Glucosamine

My SWMBO is a head veterinary nurse and she has also been to seminars that have provided good evidence that green lipped mussels are effective in treating animals with arthritic joint problems.

They state that they contain glucosamine and chodrontin in a 'natural' form and they work in synthesis with each other. The only proviso is that the green lipped mussel extract is in a liquid capsule form rather than dried.

I will have to try it myself...

About 10 years ago I suddenly found I couldn't walk - right knee completely seized. Had arthroscopy and was playing rugger again in three weeks. That knee has always been a bit dodgy since a botched cartilege operation when I was 18 but it is no worse now that it was 20 years ago. Problem is, left knee is now on the way out too.
