Arrogant Sailors

It's just another one of those 'great divide' issues. It's got b****r all to do with being a Raggie or Stinkie. it's just a reaction on the part of PC users to the endless 'PCs are crap' rant from Mac users but I think I won't go there today.

I use both. They're both great. Honest

I'm sorry I guess I got a bit caught up in the argument and didn't explain myself properly.

Well my experience suggests that there is a wide range of MOBOs - and yes I do hate them screaming past 2 metres away at full throttle. But we are friends with a lovely set of MOBO couples - the boat handling of one is something I'll never aspire to - holding his boat on station in a F9 on the beam while the harbour authority moved someone from his berth. And what can you say about a lady from Brum who troops ashore in the rubber duck wearing her gold sandals having agreed, over the VHF, to meet her friend in the hairdressers ! Personally I don't own a pair of gold sandals but each to their own !

"I believe that a bit more effort/understnding in the marina from both parties could go a long way........"

Just about sums it up really.

Yes, there is rudeness and after some recent experience on a stinkie I have to admit that most of it seems to come from my side of the fence, the raggies. In part I think it is a class thing - leaving aside the mega boats, and as a sweeping generalisation, sailing seems to be more middle class and power boating more "jack made good". Could be that some raggies are irritated / jealous by open flaunting of wealth. Certainly I suspect this is a factor in the sometimes expressed Raggie preference for the old/narrow/heavy/tired sailboat.

In part it is also a lack of common ground other than (perhaps) a hatred of MDL. Raggies sail for the pleasure of the journey and the exercise of a skill so time/speed is often not important. Mobo seems to be more about the destination than the journey . And this difference is relected in the RYA course take up, with way more raggies than stinkies bothering to take the qualifications. Its also reflected in the sailing clubs that wont let power boats in, and the splits that I have seen in the clubs that do take both factions.

Do we look down on stinkies? I certainly dont, though I do see boats such as Princesses as examples of bad taste, and horrendously ugly. And yes I did smile at the totty with the skin tight pants, marigolds and high heels doing service as a deckhand on an old mans 65ft Mobo . But then whis stinkie doesnt smile at the old-man-of-the-sea raggie with Breton cap, pink pants, blazer even?

All of this is sweeping generalisation of course. And none of it is an excuse for \being bad mannered and unfriendly - even to Trolls

Any rudeness is few and far between, and seems to be stirred up by a small minority.

After many threads on the subject, you can only assume any one trying to restart the arguement has to be trolling. I've had enough of the subject, and will speak my mind to them, rather than being gentle.
