I will feel less guilty staying in the pub while the wind rages outside now that the Around Alone start has been postponed until Monday because of the severe gale blowing into Torbay.

>>Oh dear. Didn't someone say that Steve101 was there this weekend?

Surely, he's not yet so famous that they delay race starts to avoid him.
Or is he?

I have to smile at the fact that they have delayed the start the leg of a race that, when it gets further south these conditions will be normal, it rather makes a mockery of the race when you can't start because of some heavy wind, these are supposed to be "proffesional" sailors, with more than a few miles under there belts. Or is the reason that it was delayed because it was a beat to windward, and these boats only go well off the wind?

Exactly. Don\'t the organisers realise ...

... that the only reason the public - and hence the media and crucially the sponsors - take an interest in such events is the prospect of a bit of death-and-glory stuff. And where better to do it than off the SW coast where the press helicopters can get straight out there for action shots of the prangs? A good Pete Goss style rescue would be just the job, but even a few RNLI sorties would have kept '999' in footage through the winter.

Send 'em out, say I, the stormier the better.

There was an onshore gale into the marina and start area - the engines are sealed
by scrutineers and the boats have to be towed to the open sea.
Conditions in Torbay on Sunday morning with driving rain and low vis. made the
delay inevitable.
