hi

Planning to head from Arklow to West Cork in September and I am wondering about the best approach to round Carnsore point and in to Kilmore Quay on the way. I have heard all different advice from going sth of Great Saltee, through Saltee Sound and over St Patricks Bridge. Also what is the best time to try and round Carnsore in order to still have favourable tide on approach to Kilmore. any help much appreciated

Regards

Stuart

Given reasonable conditions, you can round Carnsore Point fairly close in and steer for St Patrick’s Bridge. If you keep within a mile from the shore as you turn the corner you will avoid Black Rocks. Pass between the red and green buoys at the Bridge and head for the safe water buoy just ahead of you. From there you should be able to see the leading marks for Kilmore Quay. There can be quite a tide running so you may need to steer one way or the other more than you think, but the marks are fairly big and you should not have a problem. Watch when you turn into the harbour entrance, there are often fairly large fishing boats moored on both sides of the entrance and you will not want to meet anything big coming out. Nice place to visit.

I have been round the Point many times. It is not always easy to judge your arrival to coincide with a favourable tide. It really doesnt matter if the tide is against you apart from slow progress unless the wind as against tide above about F6 when it gets pretty bumpy. Keep close to the land

Only been into Kilmore once it is worth a visit.

I used Stanfords All weather chart Pack for South East Ireland to Wales. It has a route planning chart of the whole area then larger scale ones covering sections of the coast and very large scale plans of harbours and their approaches including Kilmore Quay.

I came in over St Patricks bridge then up the transit of the leading marks.

Kilmore Quay was jam packed a couple of weeks ago and most visitors were rafted up. When the berthing master came aboard to collect the fee I filled in the form and (honestly) put down the boat length. He said "Now I wish you hadn't done that because it puts you in the higher band. Now I'll have to alter it" So saying he changes it to 10metres and asks for 25 euros /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

As for the approach, as others have said it is quite straightforward, and there is a new mark to aim for at the start of the fairway. (Safe water mark IIRC)
