Hi

Short bit of chain, two u bolts and a chain catch. Anyone made their own up? Or could point me to a source?

Very nice woman at firm said that they had only sold one in all the years. Not surprised as they are £70!

I sailed a boat very recently with a Monitor (great bit of kit) and instead on the chunky chain and bronze fitting on the tiller, this used a much small stainless link chain with a very simple stainless "T" shaped fitting that had a simply slit cut into it, difficult to describe but presumably standard Monitor design and easily fabricated DIY I'm sure. It worked perfectly. I'm not sure the chain and tiller linkage on the Aries isn't excessive overkill. I'm a great fan of the Aries and have owned several but I thought the simple Monitor design would be just as good.

I have the correct fitting on my boat.
However, I have often felt that a chain with a slightly bigger link & a pin epoxied in as suggested earlier would be a better option
It could be mounted inside the bottom leg of a a "C" channel section below the tiller if you did not want it on top but may induce some flexing.
The suggestion of a piece inverted "T" with a slot in the leg is also a good option. Ideally they want to go on top of the tiller so that the chain does not drop out but may foul the tiller extension if one is fitted so a raising piece for that has to be considered. The slot in the T could be on the front of the leg so that the T can be mounted under the tiller but the chain may want to jump out of the slot on full lock
The other answer could possibly be a tiller mate to just lock on the line thus not needing a chain
I certainly would not pay £70-00 for the bronze fitting , that is a con-- Actually I may retract that statement as I think I have a spare !!!!!
