Every damn boat I get has an Eberspacher and every one of them has given me problems! Maybe I am just unlucky.
I have searched the forums and can't find any info on this latest problem, so at least I have something new to ask for help on!
It's an Airtronic D5 about 4 or 5 years old, or so I was told when I bought the boat in Feb this year. The first fault I had was related to corroded connections which I sorted, but that another story and since fixing has been perfect - until last week that is.
Last Wednesday whilst on a wee holiday cruise, it got a bit nippy so on went the Ebby. All seemed normal and heating fine except one small issue. I couldn't help but notice, even in the dark, plenty of black sooty smoke was pouring out the exhaust leaving a nice black layer of oily soot all over the side of the boat following the wind direction. Needless to say I switched off. I tried again several times later with the same result. Back at the marina I ran it for about 40 mins to see if it would burn off. It just carried on pumping out black smoke. It didn't shut down though and seemed to heat okay.
Nothing has changed except for the first time I filled up with diesel. Coincidence? Probably, as the engines and genny are working fine.
We should start an Eberspacher forum, given how unreliable these products seem to be for many people - especially me it seems!
Anyone any ideas what could be wrong? All the research I have done seems to offer cures for white smoke issues and shutdowns.
Any advice would be appreciated.
