Latestarter1 I am sure will be along soon... I have 230 Yanmar, been a peach, but I know the BMW marinised lumps are the troublesome ones... I don't think that includes the 370's...

god, i hope not !

still waiting for Latestarter1.... but to put your mind at ease.... just found this info..The engine group you are looking at is the 6LY series. At 370 hp they are very good engines. 354 cubic inches, 1400 pounds, quiet and don't drink alot. That same engine block, now common rail has models up to 480 hp.

Should be OK, messy to do filter oil changes, have plenty of rags handy, Air intake filter breathes the engine breath back in, can and does block the intercooler matrix if you lose power/revs and black smoke ten to one it will be the matrix needing a blasting. I know of no other problems, although there was some controversy over valves dropping not sure which engine this was however.

6YLA,s if they are those @ 370 hp
Have cam belts -need changing + tensioner at reccomended interval - otherwise -BANG ! ,!
As mentioned earlier ones subject to recall re dropping valves - but LS will know more .

6LYA STE, probably the best mechanical engine out there in the power node.

Sweet motor, reasonable start up smoke levels, provided that it it is propped correctly trouble free rocket ship.

Just remember tachos read optimistic, You MUST see at least 3,400 rpm WOT clean.

Zero issues with valves, stupid 'dock talk', same as suggestion re use of synthetic lubes.....Don't

Use Yanmar coolant only, manifold/heat exchanger is over £4K, parts prices make Volvo Penta pricing seem like shopping at ASDA.

Enjoy them.

Google -"Yanmar class action lawsuit valves "
Zero issues ? Dock talk??

The recall issue after a US class action lawsiut -revolved around the valve seals wiping off too much oil from the valve stems. The valves would stick in the guides and get bent by the pistons. Mitigation was simply replacing the valve stem seals. The main symptom was a rattling noise on deceleration.
Those engines are now out of production as Toyota has quit producing the block.

Call your local dealer with your serial numbers to see if the engines fall within the recall series.

6LYA STE 100% Yanmar base engine 100X110 bore stroke 5.184 liters with dry liner and front gear drive to cam and fuel pump, block is quite different from the 6LY2 STE 105X110 5.813 liters which was gained by removing the liner and making parent bore with chemical coating, another case of bigger displacement not being better, as the 105mm block becomes a throw away motor.

The valve aggro was with the totally unrelated 6LPA engine, Toyota based 94X100 4.164 liters with belt drive to cam. Other than the valve drop campaign this was a good motor, cam belt has long service interval and never an issue.

6LYA STE 370, durable, reliable, and ultimately repairable provided owner has deep enough pockets.

Contacted my old Yanmar distributor in U.S. for update as result of this post. They have heap 6LY 370's in downest stye boats with 12/14,000 hours with zero issues.

Current Yanamr situation in U.S is dire for the distributors. Sailboat puddle jumpers selling well. 4HLA was a star and badly missed, likewise the 6LP was a big seller and 6LYA2 had no competition at 420 hp. Replacement 6LYA3 certified to Tier II has been hopeless, smoke issues due to half baked and mega expensive fuel system has led to this range being withdrawn after less than eight years. The BY BMW based range has proved to be a costly disaster, and only the Toyota based 8LV is selling in any numbers. The agreement to sell the high hosepower badge engineered Scania 6 and V8 motors ends at Tier II and will not be renewed.

Volvo Penta U.S volumes on the rise again.

Great engine but don't like overloading, make sure you check that at WOT there is no black smoke, even though the engine is rated at 3300rpm it should be propped for at least 100rpm above. check the colour of the boat transom.

the engine should easily start with some blue/smoke which will clear as the engine gets warm, you will get a fair bit of black smoke under acceleration.

However, maintenance is is the main factor lots of lovely maintenance. regular oil changes at least once a year. make sure the fuel is clean

Fuel lift pumps can be troublsome

Otherwise, a proper Yanmar.

+1 on overloading, hower double jeopardy as tacho reads AT LEAST 100 rpm optimistic.

Hi All

I am looking at re-engining a boat and thinking about a set of 2008 yanmar 370hp and putting them on volvo DPH drives. Has anyone done this and do you know if you can get any more HP out of them?

I suspect torque will destroy VP DPH drives without any thoughts about uprating.
