On the few occasions that my wife comes sailing she is maddeningly much better on the tiller than I am. She can also detect windshifts much better despite my short backsides haircut a la Dennis Connor !

I too would say Charles that an autopilot is the singlehanders best friend. In my view, even in front of GPS ,radar and perhaps blow up dolls.

I am comforted by an insurance friend of mine who states that on 1000 miles driven, women have far, far more accidents than men. Although they tend to be the low impact variety. This is due to low ‘spacial’ skills because our male past gave us practice at throwing spears and guessing distances etc in order for mum to cook dinner.
