Are we heading for a year of extreme weather worldwide?

Interesting thoughts. I read somewhere, with of course questionable provenance, that with the drastic drop in air travel, there are fewer particulates in the air, reducing cloud seeding (I gather water droplets need a particle of dust/smoke/etc on which to condense). If true, fewer clouds = less rain, more solar heating of the surface = higher temperature.......

Who knows, its a complicated system.

I have just completed an excellent and free Futurelearn course about the weather. One stat they quote is that when that volcano erupted and caused cessation of air travel, the increased pollution from the volcano was much more than just compensated for, by the lack of pollution from air travel.

edit: Here is the quotation:

"As the figure below shows, the amount of carbon dioxide the volcano emitted was less than the amount saved by the cancellation of European and trans-Atlantic flights. In addition, fewer flights means fewer contrails, which may have meant there was less high level cloud. What impact this may have on the climate is still being researched."

This is a link to the page, but you may need to register on the (free) course to see it in full.
