G'day,
I am curious if there are other similar events to the Jester challenge etc?, In particular in or near Australia?
We have a Solo Trans-Tasman here from NZ to Mooloolaba, Qld, Australia, but the rules & regulations make my eyes glaze over.....you need Cat this & Cat that etc.
btw I really appriciate the members discussing various things about crossing oceans on small sailboats, & i have learnt alot by going back through the pages & reading the posts.
cheers

G'day mate, what are you sailing? I'm attending the JC 2012 and thinking of continuing to Australia from the Azores...there's no reason why something of a similar nature could not be setup back in oz...(food for thought....:) )

Because of the lack of rules, all it takes is for someone to announce a challenge. Trans Tasman sounds feasible. Trans Pacific might be more interesting. Somewhere on the East Coast of Australia to somewhere in Chile. Chile to Australia down around 40deg South would make it a similar challenge to the Jester Challenge having the prevailing wind and waves on the nose.

The only issue might be that Australia and Chile for that matter take a more 'Nannystate' approach to yachtspeople and may set unrealistic rules that make it hard for a Jester style Challenge to occur. Both countries have very large SAR responsibilities and relatively small populations paying for their SAR and therefore may not like what they see as irresponsible Yachtspeople setting off without a lot of rules. You might want to point out to the relevant authorities that one of Blondie Hasler's beliefs is that we should all 'die like gentlemen' and not have radios or other means of alerting authorities that we were in trouble.

It only takes a small number of like minded people to start.

Junkrig, let's lay down the gauntlet.
Where do we start? Eden is roughly midway between the 2 main capitals, accessible to those from the south...

How about Eden to Lord Howe (560nm) one year, Eden to Grassy (King Is) the next?. How far's that?....329nm direct, o.k. say let's go via some other place.

Safety equipment as mandated by relevant state authorities, which excludes mandatory liferaft on vessels less than 12m LOA (Vic). But includes EPIRB, etc. Normally carried anyway.

Time: A few days after the Sydney-Hobart fleets go through, say closer to new year's day?
Rules? 20 to 30 feet? Max 2 crew? Prizemoney? loaf of fresh bread and a cold drink of choice at destination?.

I'm up for it this year.

:) This is a bit like the moment when Capt John Illingworth said "Lets make a race of it" & so the Sydney to Hobart was born....

I'm not up for organising anything, next oz summer(2012-13) may be a possibility for me, have always wanted to sail to Lord Howe!

Certainly something to think about, could surely(??) get 10 or a dozen like-minded sailors interested??

As mentioned above, the nanny state, red tape, bureaucratic(justifying their own existance by inventing rules/laws) will be the main hurdle, but if theres no rules, no prizemoney, etc etc....maybe not a problem?

food for thought,
cheers
