Are there new rules on the sale of meths?

Heard rumour of changes when I was still in England. Today Homebase Oban told me they weren't allowed to sell meths. Did manage to buy a small quantity expensively at a pharmacy. Chandlery at Titchmarsh told me that their building was not licensable to store Meths - which is a different issue. However, as far as I can see you can even buy it online. Anyone know if there has actually been a change in legislation?

According to the Homebase website it is widely available in their stores in England but not in Scotland. I looked at a couple of places near the border, and it's evidently a Scottish thing.

Anyone buying anything like this in a normal shop is mad.
Get it on the net and in 5 liter bottles. in the UK we are forced to buy small quantities for expensive prices. even Carrefour in France sells meths by the liter and for similar price as we are charged for 500ml. it makes me mad when i look through a West Marine web site and see that they sell stuff by the gallon. Its the same principle as coca cola. big bottles are far cheaper than buying the same amount in cans.

Rant over...

Makes me laugh that the girlies buy nail varnish remover at about £5 per 50ml and i buy 5Lts of acetone for about the same price.

Yes, I used to buy it in 5 litre cans from a builders' merchant in England. Unfortunately Pickfords turned their nose up at it when moving, and I was caught out with none when I needed it fast.

I tried to buy a bottle of Stroh rum at an airport a few years ago (think it was in Spain but not 100% sure) and was disappointed to find that they only had the 60% ABV not the 80% which I had 'experienced' in an earlier life. I found an assistant and asked if they had the 80% and he replied that they weren't allowed to stock it because it's considered a fire hazard.

I prefer to nick a girls nail varnish remover than use my acetone on nails! ;)

But nail varnish remover is acetone! Just in a small pretty bottle rather than a rusty half-gallon can.

Traditionally so, anyway. Perhaps they have some new non-toxic low-VOC eco-friendly formulation now?
