Are there any Visitors moorings in Plymouth Sound?

Don't know of any visitors moorings as such. There are a fantastic range of anchorages round and about that will suit just about any weather Aeolus will throw at you. You might be able to pick up a "spare" mooring which is free, but you will have to be prepared to vacate it should the owner return. Usual rules apply.

As said above: keep well out of the way of the big grey navy things and the black submersible cans... the police patrol will be shouting at you very loudly if not. Know from experience /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

The RWYC buoys off QAB are £12.50 per 24 hours (I sailed past them yesterday).
There also used to be a couple off Plymouth Corinthians foreshore.
Have a look at Mark Fishwicks Westcountry cruising guide for some more ideas - especially the good anchorages.
Steve.

There are visitors moorings in the Cattewater. My club (Saltash) will usually be able to find you a spare mooring if you ask at the clubhouse. (Go alongside the pontoon and walk up to the clubhouse and ask.) The pontoon on the West bank just north of the Tamar Bridge is free for 12 hours if you can get on it. (Its not policed very well sometimes and gets abused...)

I believe that most of the clubs will find you a visitors/temporary mooring at very reasonable rates if you ask. Torpoint Mosquito, Tamar River etc etc.

If you got up the river, the moorings outside the Crooked Spaniard at Cargreen are free if you eat in the pub.

Picking up a spare mooring without permission can be a bit risky particularly if you have a biggish boat. Many of the private and club moorings up by Saltash Sailing Club are length restricted to 30ft vessels. Not that I am suggesting that someone will come out with a tape measure! It is simply that the tackle is not expected to take anything bigger and there could be a problem that is all. Having said that the club moorings there are inspected every year so they should all be in good condition.

As John mentioned... if you ask at the club they will always do their best to accomodate you and you could have a pint of Betty Stoggs while you are there I have no doubt /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

In the Sound itself there are a few largish yellow cans directly opposite the Long Room, behind Drakes Island. They are navy I believe but a quick call to the Long Room on VHF and they often give permission to stop there. Fine in calm weather but a bit rolly polly when the wind or sea is up though.

Last time I was there I noticed that the current really flows fast around Drake's Island, particularly at springs when some of the larger mooring buoys were being pulled under by the current. Are the anchorages up the Tamar safe from that point of view, or do you have to keep a good 24/24 anchor watch?

BTW John, I don't know if you saw it in the local paper but the Saltash council have voted that the public pontoon (Jubilee Pontoon), just north of the bridges, be restricted to 2hrs max! The signage still says 12hrs but even when they change the signage I am curious how they will police it.

Well I'm damned glad something's going to be done about those boats that seem to be permanently berthed there!! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif Several times we've wanted to stop off and show visiting friends Saltash, but have never been able to get alongside, either through the aforementioned boats, or others very badly (deliberately?) spaced. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

The owners, when they were there, all seemed to know each other and appeared to treat the pontoon as theirs, making no effort to move them to allow us alongside. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

All strength to the local Council's arm! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have some sympathys with your views - but I wish the council had voted to police it more effectively. When the Jubilee pontoon was built I thought it was one of the most imaginative things that the council had done. Restrict it to 2 hours and still not policing it does nothing.

I too have got annoyed with people leaving their boats there long term. I have often taken YM candidates up to park there to discover that there's no room.

Couldn't agree more, 2hrs barely gives you time to claw your way up the hill into Saltash!
Whenever I've been to the Jubilee pontoon I've had to raft, usually against the same boat.....
