Are team colours poncey ?

Have you noticed that crews are getting more decked out with the same shirt and trousers recently ?

Although this was always around for racing crews it now seems to have spread into cruisers. Particularly on rallies and the like. I think the best one I saw this year was a classic boat flying a defaced Blue Ensign. The 4 crew had matching trousers and blue hooped shirts. The skipper had the same trousers but an all blue shirt with what looked like the defaced ensign bit on his back !

Other seem to have the name of their boat on their backs like footballers do. I think it brightens things up a bit.

All my regular crew wear matching green polo shirts(when its warm enough)and are pleased to do so, with our little logo.

A couple of people who sail with me have matching foulies - but only because we all took advantage of the same cut price offer ......

Is this the 2002 version of reefer jackets with black buttons for owners and brass ones for crew? And don't forget to put a white cover on your yachting cap on May 1st!

It must make doing the laundry incredibly complex on long cruises, can't see how they'd manage to keep it up on a six week trip. It does imply an impressive level of organisation that me and my humble crew would never achive, we usually end up recycling the least dirty tee shirts after a few days away. A whole new system of nautical etiquette will develop, if this catches on I guess I'll never make it into the Squadron..................

Re: Poncey yes ..and naff

Not sure what the purpose is. I fear boat dress/fashion is trying to compete with golf - I look forward to big diamond patterned (Pringle, natch) sweaters as the next step. Incidentally, why do we 'import' clothing from other sports? - eg Rugby shirt, Polo shirt etc. Will it be netball skirts next?

Team colour disadvantages

Laundry-wise, it's a total nightmare.

More seriously, it's also thought by some that having a load of crew ashore wearing the same logo pose a security risk, announcing that the boat in question is unguarded.

On my first boat we had matching oilskins with WIMPEY written on the back.
I must have been a trendsetter!

Vic, I used to live near St Malo and there was nothing more disheartening than to go through the Porte St Vincent and be confronted with dozens of ruddy faced Englishmen drinking in teams and wearing matching sailing 'rugby shirts'. Get me out of here!

I've got a guernsey, knitted eons ago by my late mother, with my boat's name on the front. Does that count? Come to think of it I also own a reefer jacket - a warm, comfortable garment with pockets to put things in!

Oh dear, shall I ever live this down?

Not poncey at all, the word team sums it up perfectly. Can be useful as you can see when your team are at the bar so can blag drinks etc.

My kit for next season will be named as well:

Pit Boss - moi
Pit Bitch - SWMBO
Pit Bratt no 1
Pit Bratt no 2
Pit Passenger (for guests)
:))

I've still got a pair of hairy tweed climbing breeches .. but don't tell anybody! In NE Scotland the fishermen called a woollen sweater a "Ganzie", derived from Guernsey I presume!

If worn by a Ponce - Yes...

...what is the matter with people? There are enough dodgy old men sailing around with pink trousers and polo necked sweaters - a sign if ever there was one.

Live & let live. The "Team" sailing gear we wear most of the time is universal homosapiens pink all over which changes to red then brown as the season progresses. The team shirts only come out to go ashore to the tavernas.

Was this posted by some sort of totalitarian dictator? (I deleted the word I WAS going to use)
