Are people becoming useless

As I am being told by all and sundry that this is a boating forum let me just suggest that being able to re-partition a hard drive is of little use when the motor packs up as you are being driven to a lee shore :D

quite.. missed this one.. :)
moral is to have a Raid partitioned drive system. Unplug the faulty one just before you run ashore......

Or just claw your way upwind and stay in deep water... long in advance of any such problem??

Forgot to tell you that your in-mast furling main which you don't know how to fix has got stuck, half-furled.

Sound nasty..
If the weather required prompt action..?

Take a stout line forard - as far round the forestay as far as you can get it. Cut off furling line at drum. take 3 or 4 wraps round the partly furled sail above the furler (think of direction....!) Have somebody tail it. Winch in and furl the headsail. Sail tie round head sail. Job pretty well done?

Sort out later...

I think you've just done the equivalent of changing the printer ink cartridge because the paper has run out...

First photo shows two yard staff, both very competent, trying to unfurl a jammed mainsail at Leros. They do about three per week, on average. This one took nearly two hours.
Second photo shows two professional skippers trying to unfurl one at Loutra, Kithnos, in very benign conditions. It took them an hour but they managed it without climbing the mast.

Hey, there's a man after my own heart. Scottish VS at 13 is remarkable - all necky. Best I achieved (a lot older) was Old Man of Hoy in '72. Then got home & hoisted engine out of clapped Morris 1300; took off the head, reground the valves, etc. All came in handy this summer when I fixed a 1973 diesel Volvo MD2B on my old boat. Trouble is, I had to hang upside down like a bat, to do it. But I used to do that climbing an overhang in Dovedale (I kept telling myself). Had I not repaired my own cars thro '70's, '80's, I'd be stumping up loads for a new boat engine, now!
