I recently sold my outboard within 1 hour of advertising it on e bay and there were lots of requests to come and view the engine. I know building materials are in short supply but I was not aware of a surge in engine buying. Was this a one off or is there a lot of interest in boating gear at the moment in the UK?

Anything boaty was in demand last summer and doubtless the same applies this year given going on a holiday in furrinland is limited and likely very expensive.

Yes, serious shortage just like everything else connected with outdoor activity over the last year.

Same for Outboard parts.

Mine died last season, the new one I wanted was unavailable with a lead time well over three months. I ended up rebuilding my existing one and buying a spare second hand one.

See also, bikes, kayaks, SUPs + parts and accessories for any of those.

Going by prices on ebay my 4 stroke 50hp outboard is worth more now than it was when i bought it used 6 years ago ? I bought a 16ft centre consol on a trailer and could sell the outboard now for more than i paid for the whole boat...
2 strokes seemed to have dived in price though..

My Honda dealer had quite a few outboards in stock a month ago but they were all allocated to new boats he was selling. These engines were in the 10 to 20 hp range but the supply of larger ones was no better. Seemed to be due to covid and the increas of people buying boats, either new or second hand. Once engines sold out more stock was expected until late summer.

Speaking to Evotek today, last year used up all available stock, covid slowed production of components. Order new now, lucky to get one in October. Steering cables also in short supply.
I would suggest look at your outboard security.

Incidentally he also said he has, many times, trolleyed or carried an engine off the pontoon, while dressed in a boiler suit, and never been challenged......
