Well, a lot of them are incredibly noisy for others who are outside the boat. There was one this year at my mooring which could be heard 400 yds away - a roaring sound like a 10 lane freeway in Los Angeles at rush hour. Do they have to be like that? And why cant peole use shore power when it's freely available and allow their neighbours a decent night's sleep?
There - rant over!!

Get over it, just cos your freezing does'nt mean its obligatory for everyone else!

Oh yay, another thread for people to alternate between "I can't sleep unless it's quieter than the middle of the desert and the world must live a monk like existence and bend to my needs" and "I love my shiny do-hicky, begone peasant!".

Joy...

Quite frankly that's a p155 poor attitude my friend.

Eberspachers can be fitted with silencers.

Hmmmm, do you reckon pal? I'd tend to describe an eber exhaust as a muted murmur (even unsilenced) and if someone is troubled so easily by such a noise then close proximity to other boats is probably not for them cos there's a lot of aother things that are definitely going to trouble the poor dears little pearly ears!

WARNING - the problem with the commonly available silencers is that they are not designed to be gas-tight - they are intended to be installed in the open under a road-going vehicle. I hope when I finally get mine going it'll be acceptably quiet, though. I wonder whether the length of the exhaust pipe has a significant effect on the sound levels, it could after all be a tuned length which will sound like a mediaeval trumpet!

Rob.

And I'm not talking about a "muted murmur" - I'm talking about a LOUD ROAR................pal.

Sweetie Pie, are you sure it was an eberspacher and not a wind turbine , generator or aircraft taking off? Perhaps you weere moored near Cape Carnarval and it was the space shuttle blast off?

Blimming noisy things............

Yes they are noisy and the closer the burner to the hull outlet the worse the roar is.
However I am aware about how much noise they make and will always check who is within annoying distance and try not to use unless absolutely vital to avoid hypothermia and/or the wife threatens violence.*

*Us stinkpotters can actually get our wives(singular) to go boating with us. :)

They don't have to be noisy. I can sit in the cockpitofmy boat 3 ft above the hull outlet and can't hear the exhaust. If I open the cockpit locker lid I can hear the heater wooshing. Fit the proper silencer, not the metal box type from ebay.

Misread this thread...CO worse than noise?

I moored overnight in York in my canal boat days. Came back from dinner to find a large hire boat had moved my boat and squeezed into a very small gap, less than .5m. between us.

He had to be 'asked' to stop running/revving his engine (no idea why) when the large group came back from the pub as the exhaust was filling our vents and cabin.

Sleep at last, well it could have been permanent, his eber was left running and the exhaust for that also filled our small cabin. Didn't realise as the noise was minor but the consequences could have been serious. Awoke groggy to say the least, breakfast at Naburn.
