when it comes to sailing that is

Dylan on the hook behind Whitton Island

three pairs of socks, double trousers, triple top, two sleeping bags

the tide has now dropped enough for the Humber to settle down

I have no idea why I am doing this to myself

any suggestions for alternative forms of winter entertainment gratfullly considered

Spa. Ragdale hall is nice.
Sailing in the BVI's.
Philately
Sitting in front of the telly with a port.
Country walks
Needlcraft
Model airplane making
Sniffing glue
Driving expensive cars in the snow
Sledging
Eating to excess

Same for me as always this time of year.

Log fire, bottle of Rioja, warm house, warm wife, and using my iPad to read blogs form mad fools who at their age should know that sailing in this country should only be conducted during BST.

I myself enjoy those evenings

I think the trouble might be that I need to do this to myself occasionally to make me appreciate the log fire, Merlot, pre-warmed bed.

tommorrow evening, when I get home, the couch will rock a bit and I will feel lucky to be there

No imagination... that is my problem

I spent three nights on Taringa last week. Admitedly tied to the pontoon throughout. 1KW fan heater, turned off during sleep. 2 Sleeping bags + balaclava. -8C min outside, +1C min inside. Marina freezing over. Doesn't stop me cycling either. People are too soft.

I know what you're getting at - our boarding house kept its third and fourth formers in a lightly-converted barn, which was always bloody freezing in winter. We used to reckon they turned the heating on only in summer, when fuel was cheaper :)

Pete

Heating is not on in our house - well, only one room with the underfloor stuff - but the wall-mounted jobbies are switched off. Diving thermal top on & Uggs (and other stuff). British Gas can just bugger off. And I am perfectly warm, too warm in fact! Must be cos I am an ex-diver & used to long, cold hangs....

Dylan has wisely figured that there's nowt on telly unless you get out there and film yer own , I reckon..

Something wonderful about winter stars visible, tucked up anchored in some backwater with the sound of ice trying to bend as the tide falls away from the mudflats.

Not sure about the Merlot though . There are some pretty good syrah n Grenache efforts on knock down boaty prices around

Chichester used to sleep under a single sheet - winter and summer

of course us boarders had to come to terms with the fact that our mummies diod not really love us as much as the day boys mummies did

Making no specific allegations Dylan, but that does beg the question of WHO your mummies were loving when you were safely tucked up under your single sheet in winter...!

Is this a southern thing? We didn't have boarding schools up North. Didn't really have schools to be honest, it was more like day care for aspiring criminals.

As such, I'm well hardened. Currently sat with a fan heater on, which is supplementing the Eberspacher, which is is combining with the croissants in the oven, to make it quite warm.

Im the same only heating on in one room
and water bottles are great arnt they!
And i never was a diver...just survival wit the price o fuel!
wonder if prisons are warm!?

Good grief Dylan! I thought you were a 'tough' guy....

Nice and toasty on our boat, fan heater on,hot water bottles steaming, thermals on, lentil soup bubbling on the stove, feather duvet on the bed.

Damn sight warmer than my boarding school I can tell you.

Well, my six years in Lancaster, playing rugby against other boarding schools, says you're wrong! But then the out-of-hours activities some indulged in says you're maybe not so wide of the mark, Nathan!

How odd. I didn't know anybody, or anybody that knew anybody, that went to boarding school. Perhaps an age thing rather than location then?

Either that, or I was just far too low down the pecking order to have such acquaintances. :p

Knew a bloke once told me he went to a really good school as a boarder. He knew it must have been good because it was approved.
