are 1 and 3 the same?

Yes.. They are effectively the same in that the half hitches start the same side as they exit the turn.

They are a mirror image so you could say they are different.. but that like saying your right hand is not the same as your left hand!

How could I ignore a fellow boat owner....

;-) .. IOU boat sailed like a dream, had her out in a good F7 and gave her a good testing, failed to get lee rail under with a single reef in .. but still got 8+ knots with 2 reefs and third of jib out. Tracked straight when putting a reef in and wheel unattended. Bev was suitably impressed although she made me tidy up inside after ;-\0

Same here, I chopped 5 cm's out of each of my back stays last week ( that was a heart in mouth moment ) as I couldn't get them tight enough.
Sailed on Sunday with genoa wound in to the second mark, a reef in the main and no mizzen in 32 knots of wind.
As you say, "boat sailed like a dream" and the back stays stayed attached to the bottle screws :)

JIngs, Nige, its taken you long enough to sort out the boat ;-\0

Great though, when a plan works, amazing how much difference a bit of rig tuning makes!

I've only had it 12 years! You have to live with it a bit before you start chopping and changing things :D

Like I say, heart in mouth moment! I measured the wire as 7mm and ordered 7mm Norseman Cones. I then saw 9/32 stamped on the bottle screws  so had to check.
Worried about knocking old wire and cone out of the end of the bottle screw.
Worried about how much wire to cut out.
Worried that I couldn't make a good join . . . . .

aahhh.. a bit like,
I'm seacock #1, five more to go

then

I'm seacock #2, four more to go...

then

I'm seacock #3, three more to go...
