I was under the impression that it was to prevent the bulbs from overheating but could be wrong. Maybe it's both reasons.

Yes, I thought it was to avoid overheating - at least with my deck flood which did finally succumb after about 20 years. I was going to search for a sealed type, but then thought that (i) it would mean a different fit with more holes, and (ii) I'd be delighted if I were around and concerned about it in another 20 years.

Back to the OPs request for a reliable LED masthead light, we've had a NASA Supernova Combi at the top of our mast for the last 3 yrs, and it is still working fine. I know they had a poor reputation a few years ago, but they seem to have improved.
