Aquadrive failure

Hi all, I'm Jack, glad to become part of this forum, it's great!

I have recently acquired a kingfisher 26 sailing boat with a Yanmar 1gm10 lump in it.
Shortly before I took charge of it, while crossing the Bristol channel, the drivetrain suddenly started making a loud grinding vibration. I have quickly identified this as the thrust unit, which appears to be an 'Aquadrive' type.

Now, I will remove this from the boat today, but I am not sure what parts are available for a unit such as this. Does anyone know if and where I can source a new bearing for this, or, indeed, if it's even a serviceable part?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks, Jack Underhill.

It looks like your not going anywhere in a hurry! A lot will depend on what you find when you get the unit out and clean it up. I've deleted some guff I wrote based on assumptions about the design after having a look at the Halyard website. You'll need to measure it up and identify the model. They are available with or without thrust bearings but have CV joints. Remember the Mini (the real one)? They had CV joints and when they wore out they were a replacement job, but if the noise is from thrust bearings I guess you should be able to replace those.

Basically the Aquadrive is a pillow block with opposed taper roller bearings (I believe) to take the thrust.

I think it uses a ball race as a thrust bearing, but the most important part of the Aquadrive is the pair of CV joints.

Sealed ball races on the smaller units and taper roller bearings on the larger units according to my old brochure, so yes probably ball on this one.

That looks like an old Aquadrive Mini. Which is now discontinued, I only know because I have one lying around in the garage.
Halyard manufactured them so probably worth talking to them first.
Also might be worth taking it into a car specialist to look at as they most likely use off the shelf CV joints and bearings whilst making them.

Someone mentioned the old mini, but all FWD cars use CV joints on the drive shafts. Hopefully there will be something suitable.

If it's the thrust bearing, which seems likely, then IIRC on the mini on my last boat, it was a self aligning sealed ball-race, readily available through a bearing suppliers I'd think. Presumably retained by a hefty circlip or similar.
Judging from the picture, it's probable that failure is due to general rusting causing damage to the seals. Plenty of TLC seems in order.
I wouldn't back the cv joints to be too healthy either, but they won't be so critical.

Thanks for the swift replies guys. Yes, it is the thrust bearing. I have now established that it is either an aquadrive 20000 or 19100. If the latter, I have found out bearing no, but not sure if it is a 20000. Cv joints seem in good nic.

Oh my look at that!

TW Marine service them in the UK. They did mine very quickly, respray and came back looking new - 01663 745 757

That said, yours looks like it might be cheaper to replace.

Mine after some love:

It should all be replaceable with bearings and seals cheaply available from your local bearing services. Don't go anywhere near marine engineers or chandleries.

Given how long they last and that its usually a lift to service you may as well just get TW to do it and pays your money. Then it's done proper.

I know this is an old thread, but I have a 19100 in bad shape too; can you tell me what the bearing number is, I'm having trouble getting that information!
