Apropos AWBs

It's easy to see why there are fewer Non-AWB's.

They're clearly so much better that very few people actually bought them

Can all boats be reduced to a TLA?

Three letter abreviation?
We already have TCM's broad categories, but which does your boat fit into? What about:
CWB - classic wooden boat
BGP - big gin palace
BSS - big smelly speedboat
CPB - classic plastic boat
NPG - naff plastic gaffer
!*? - PWC

I'm sure that with a little effort we could make the subject completely incomprehensible to anyone outside the forum. (Or in it, quite possibly).

Re: An acid test needed here.

I'm not one of the informed chosen ones either and I have less hair than I had 20 minutes ago but I think I've sussed that AWB stands for Average White Boat?

Re: Can all boats be reduced to a TLA?

Dave,

Well I'm still struggling with AWB. I thought AWB meant "all weather boat" which would seem to be a virture. But you are all slagging AWB's so what the hell does AWB stand for?

Average White Boat. A Vertue is definitely not an AWB, although they are all-weather boats.

Re: abreviations

I thought it was a Little White Folkboat until I looked at his profile. I can't fit a Trapper into that anywhere, without using terms of abuse.

Sorry Rene, if my lovely Jenny is AWB so is your Dufour! Jennies are available in blue too and with teak decks (proper solid ones too). Also the Dehlers, skinny keels, lightish, no wood visible, very flat forefoots (forefeet?) and plasticky interiors. Agree about the CRAP though, lots of it around these day.

Acshully I think a nice light reddish tinge on a hull when lightly applied is very fetching ...

Not sure about the somewhat derogatory AWB term. Volume In Production (VIP) has a certain ring to it though. How about NWO for the non VIPs - Nobody Wants One?

Is ETAP another one for the list?

True, Dufs are not much different compaired to Jen. Before this one, I was very happy with my Jen Sun Od 28. Was a very close call when selectin a new boat between the Jen 32 and Duf 32. I love the Sun Fast version, but became a little too expensive for me.....

Still, very happy to own an Average boat compaired to a CRAP one..... (which was my first cabin boat, a Compromis 720).

And there was me thinking....All Weather Boat...which just didn't seem right at all...
My Bav was surely an ABS version of a classic AWB

We went AWB by looking out of idle curiosity at Southampton Boatshow, couldn't believe the low price of Bavarias. Closer investigation revealed they lied, the price 'as seen' was considerably higher as everything was extra! We then looked at Dufour, Jeanneau, Beneteau and Catalinas by way of comparison, and there we were boat hunting! We got close to buying a new Sun Odysey 40 but didn't really like the layout enough in the end. We then looked at used boats up to the same value/size, but saw a lot of real rubbish, including the Scandinavian brigade, Moodys and Westerlys, also a scruffy 3 year old Dufour 41 Classic (sailed nicely though). We gave up and decided we would keep our Westerly 33 which we had owned for 14 years, then 5 days later bought the Sun Legende we now have!

Yes I forgot Etaps, PUBs of course (Plastic Unsinkable Boats) but AWBs as well by all other definitions. Yes VIP has a certain ring too it!

I know we sold our 91 Bav39 for more than a new 38? and she needed new sails!
The old plastics are mostly off white when parked next to new shinny boats, ours was a pale yellow, so we made sure we always parked next to a wooden boat to make us look a bit brighter.
