As the title says, whats the best tool for applying contact adhesive especially to a vertical surface. I am replacing the galley worktop and splashback and want to achieve the best possible result so I want to be able to spread the adhesive uniformly to give the best possible grab. The area to be covered is quite large and the applicator which they supply is a fool of a thing and not suitable for spreading large amounts of glue.
Thanks
Colin

I would use one of these (which is similar to Contact Adhesive applicator) but to get a thinner layer I would spread one way and the go over it 90 degrees. Why not use a cheap "throw away" brush?

As Nigel says you can get "non drip" type adhesive.

Colin, when I built my bathroom cabinet for the hand-basin a cabinet-maker was looking at my handy-work and he pointed out that in time the formica WILL lift because it would often be wet (He was quite adamant). I have decided to epoxy glue a bit of teak trim to mechanically fix the formica along the front of the cabinet. The hand basin will hold the center and hopefully the caulking compound will seal the side and back edges.

You will need a fine tooth applicator the same as the little one supplied. I use the small supplied ones even for large areas and they work well. If you do want something bigger the blade of an old fine tooth tenon saw is ideal.

I kept a recent PBO article on veneering because I was intending to do some myself. The article mentions Thixofix although the author, a professional in the art, uses a trade equivalent for cost reasons. He suggests brushing it on to both surfaces. I have tried this but didn't find it easy to control the thickness of the film, so finished up using an applicator similar to the one shown by coopec.

I wouldn't use contact adhesive at all. There's a huge choice of adhesive /sealants on the market that are better performing.stronger ,waterproof and much easier to apply.CT1 is one.

.....and think about using a mask which is suitable for use with the solvents in the glue. Otherwise you may learn about the fad for sniffing glue. Don't ask how I learnt that lesson!
