I'm hoping to antifoul boat for first time this weekend and need advice on the order of application of antifoul and boot topping. Do I put boot topping on first (after suitable masking) then antifoul to boot topping as best I can, or having put on boot topping , wait for it to dry and then mask on boot topping and then antifoul to masked line?

Alternatively, do I antifoul first and then mask antifoul before I put on boot topping? I see from tins that antifoul dries quicker so is this recommended method?

Finally, can I do all this in one day or better to do one coating and then leave it a few days and apply the other coating? Boat is 32 ft with long keel and will be out of water for next 2 weeks so weather permitting time is on my side.

Thanks for any advice.

Hi Pete. I am sure you will have several suggestions, but I tend to go with your alternative suggestion.

This is what I do..... I mask the antifoul line and apply the antifoul first. If doing the job in one day\between tides, antifoul the top first to give longer to dry.
I then mask the top and bottom of the boot top and then antifoul that.

It may be preferable to spread over two days to give the antifoul longer to dry, but I have frequently done all between tides.

To avoid the masking tape lifting the antifoul when doing the boot top, I use the 'low-tack' masking tape.

Hope all goes well.

David has highlighted the important issue -get the masking tape that suits your timing and do be patient and wait for a spell of decent weather.

Thanks for the comments, have primered today but forecast lousy for next couple of days, so antifoul may have to wait.

Oldsalzoz - unfortunately, I bought Blakes boot topping, most expensive paint I have ever purchased, I've not heard of a tape, but will investigate next time the job needs doing.

A salutory lesson:

Last winter, used bog standard masking tape, but didn't finish the job in the day, left the masking tape on until the next weekend. Its still there!! Hours of work with a wood chisel, water and solvent only cleared a metre or two.

My yard recommended the 3M blue masking tape. I will use that next season b]and[/b] not leave it on for a week!

If you are using a gloss boot topping do that first and put the antifoul over the bottom edge of the boot topping.
If you do it the other way round you have a route for water to wick up the antifouling behind your gloss paint and you will develop a nice rash of water blisters in the paint.

Obligatory Lakesailor picture of boot topping...
