Who has this on their boats? Flipping brilliant. Stream the whole shooting match from your iTunes store onto a decent screen.

Two caveats:

1 This thread doesn't apply to owners of coracles, so there's no need to be dull about sitting in the dark with just the sounds of the oystercatchers and the smell of the bladderwrack.

2 Also hifi buffs who give a flying feck about codec compression

Yup I installed it last year. Flipping brilliant as you say. Even just a still photo, or a youtube, or nav chart, can be instantly flipped to the big screen. You need a router too, obviously, but that's easy peasy

One catch though. I'm totally not a hifi buff and cannot tell the difference between ok and great hifi, or perhaps don't care, but I did think the music had lost its edge by the time it was compressed on the iPad in the first place then sent around the houses to get to the TV (linked to speakers). That doesn't worry me though because I don't use that feature. I use Creation 5 on the iPad instead, which is fantastic, but that's a whole nuther thing.

What do you mean by "the whole shooting match"

If its only stuff from the iTunes store, that would only be music in my case, and I don't really like the idea of paying for stuff other than new'ish movies.

I'm genuinely curious as I don't really know what is available via Apple TV, or other streaming services.

You can certainly get Netflix, YouTube, Purchased movies and TV. I think also bbc iplayer (Haven't tried that yet - only bought the Apple TV yesterday. Well, actually the day before, but I forgot about it and left it in the office). I can't see why it wouldn't display anything you have as an app on an iphone. Can't get sky through it though, or so I understand.
 
I have a huge aversion to itunes for many reasons, but principally because it is hopeless at managing large collections (particulary with video, where it becomes unusable). I have an iphone and Ipad and rarely use them for music/video for that reason.

My solution is WD TV Live box (about £70), which is about the size of an Apple TV plugged into a portable 2gb Hard Drive that is full of films/music/photos etc. The WD caters for most formats of music and video, so you can take most tips with no need to transcode.
 
I think we are mixing a few different things here.
I bought the Apple TV in the US right after they introduced the 3rd gen, and the most interesting feature (imho) is that you can have a second monitor on your Mac laptop with no need for any cables.
Which means that whatever you've got on your Mac, you can also send it to the full HD TV screen via Apple TV.
Btw, that's one of the reasons why, after I gave a thought to upgrading my onboard electronics, I decided it wasn't worth the cost - which is simply ridiculous, when compared to a cheap (and much bigger) full HD monitor.
The only caveat is that this doesn't work equally well on Windows PCs, because you need an additional bit of software (Air Parrot) that doesn't work as nicely as the embedded feature of Mac OS.
...but being a Windows guy with a Mac swmbo, it's just a matter of using the most appropriate PC for the job... :D
For just viewing videos stored on a USB drive on a TV, there's no need to purchase anything, actually.
Nowadays, with most TVs it's just a matter of plugging the USB cable and select the video you want to see directly from the TV remote...
