I was interested in the article in Sailing Today recently about Navionics chart software for the Apple iphone for just £14.99.
I'm now thinking that, as I have left it too late to be the youngest person to circumnavigate the globe single handed, I might plan to be the first to do it using only an iphone for navigation.
Any sponsors?

Go for it. I'll give you a tenner.
My wife bought me a Nokia e610 or something (I've never really been into phones) for xmas. You need fingers the size of pixie to use the key pad and there's not one app (apart from the phone) that would be any use to me on the boat. So I sent her, I mean it packing and a week later recieved an i phone. I hasten to add on the same contract as the Nokia £35 a month, no charge for the phone. I've been playing with it ever since. Have you tried "Ship Finder"? Absolutely brilliant. I think it was £4.99. Pick an area, pick a ship and it tells you vital statistics, where it's going and how fast, best of all it gives you the mmsi number. There's another similar app which I have yet to try but you never know may be even better. Then there's the nautical compass like the one on your bulkhead. Then there's tide plan, boatie, wind meter (not 100% but very clever all the same) and more. Once they make a water proof version and I'm sure they will we'll be saving a fortune.
Despite the grumpy luddites I think you could use it to sail anywhere, just don't forget to buy the new Navionics charts when you move into a new zone. Having said that I can't understand why certain forumites say it's not safe to use for navigation, surely everyone uses a paper chart as a matter of course and anything electronic as a back up.
Let me know how you get on.

Err, I think the only sponsor you will need will be Apple and Navionics, certainly if you look the part you could be the face of Navionics once completed, but if you need a tenner I would pass one along, if I knew you were serious.

Just to drift the thread............

How does the link between Navionics on the iPhone work with Facebook?

My kids have decided I "need" (like a hole in the head) Facebook so have set me up with an account and I see in the Navionics settings that there is a link to Facebook.

What is this meant to do, is this a "good thing" and if so how do I make it work?

Or should this be a separate thread?

You can post your position directly on FB Long/Lat with a photo and probably other info as well. I'm still getting to grips with it myself.

Oh dear!

So much to take in and learn. Perhaps I'd be best to make it first circumnavigation by two persons and take along a small child to work the iphone........ :)
