So, coming downstream out of Hambledon lock today behind six other boats. We were crawling along behind a largish wide beam barge, so little wash and very slow. River bends slightly to the left and large bush/tree on right bank. Immediately behind this bush is a fisherman in waders shouting abuse at us all saying that we are causing too much wash and that he could have been killed by this. Not sure how, unless his waders filled with water and he toppled over...

The thing is, he was hidden behind the tree-so even if anybody was going too fast we would have no chance of anticipating his presence or avoiding his ridiculously long rod (which fortunately by this time had gone rather limp). He didn't seem to grasp this fact when I pointed it out to him. He replied (shouted) back that I must be a BMW driver with a very strong right wrist :)

Only one of those facts is true :D

He should have been fishing last night near the Henley Festival. He would have been swamped/drowned by the veritable tsunami that ensued when boats left after the fireworks...

Had the same a few years ago opposite Hamton Court I was turning upstream to moor and so was tight on the opposite side of the river.
I guess 37Ton of barge comes a a surprise when I opened the throttle to turn. Managed not to drown him.

This just about sums it up......
I will now interrupt myself to have a rant at a bank-side fisherman on the Bure somewhere before Thurne mouth, the Port bank, that is the one that should have been closest to us whilst going down river.

If you are reading this please feel free to contact me via any means possible so you can repeat what you were shouting at me without the safety of 30 odd feet of water between us and identify yourself Mad

Until we were opposite your swim we had seen no lights or any warnings of your presence whatsoever. It was after midnight, dark and foggy.

You however would have seen (And heard) craft approaching both with full nav lights on (Unless you were asleep using a bite detector alarm - if so - well your choice)

We were definitely not speeding as we passed you as the fog more that owt else put paid to any ideas of those sorts. So if I went over your tackle / lines - May I point out that the rivers of the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads are there for navigation 24 x hrs per day or NIGHT. So please bear this in mind. As had been said many times craft find it difficult to spot anglers in the reeds at the best of times but at night in fog? - you only have yourself to blame. Please feel free to inspect 'B.A' prop/shaft/rudder and collect your tackle if it is there

Having been a fisherman for many years I have never felt the need to buy waders. Why do the silly bu****s need to wade in the water when a deft cast with a proper rod will get the tackle exactly where you want it?

Oh what a shame! Pity you missed him! What is the point in standing in cold muddy water for hours on end when REAL fishermen do it, for a living and we can support them by buying their catch at a fishmongers.
