We went out for a quick jaunt to East Windsor on Sunday, and I was appalled at the standard of boatmanship shown by people, and in vessels that look like they should have known better!

Speeding: Jeez, we were doing an indicated 5.5mph, but were overtaken by just about everything, and they all left a duck-sinking wake which left our 8 tonnes of GRP distinctly shaken!

Mooring: 'Ropes' being chucked about like confetti, Skippers bawling poor orders at inept teenagers, whilst seemingly forgetting to actually helm the vessel, or position it within a reasonable range of the Lock hardware...

Steering: I always thought it was manners to use the right hand channel, especially when other smaller vessels were coming the other way...

A worst day for the good of Boating in our experience :(

I think

With the wind it seemed any boat not designed for the river was producing some amusing and some frightening incidents at the locks this weekend, Hambledon was extremely amusing with one boat not able to get onto the layby and then trying to push a narrowboat through the barrier and into the weir pool (unless that was a purposeful manouvre lol) Then once in the lock ropes all over the place trailing behind the boats, on bollards 3 back from the bow lol.

Luckily Tristan behaved herself unusually as she does suffer from the wind a tad, and I had a friend on board who complemented me on my handling of the old girl. I promised not to touch his wife again lol :-)

But again speeding boats were the norm is seems like an epidemic this year

A good weekend until 12 year old got bored this morning forcing us to return home early, only to find 18 year old not expecting us home and the house in a complete mess and his mates laying everywhere in their boxers. The answer to my what the hell is this mess? "well if you had not come home when I was not expecting you I MIGHT have tidied up" priceless

....and you didnt ring ahead to tip him the wink 'just in case' ? Oh, Nick, have you forgotten your yoof :D

Lol i never grew up Tony lol, worse thing is the "what the hell is this mess" phrase was exactly what SWMBO said to me last time she went away with friends for the night lol and came home earlier than I expected. As as wise old man once said to me "do what I say not what I do " lol and as my mates say to me me "ahh he is a chip of the old block" :-)

Tut tut its war you know.

Bloody beginner ......do shape up .

Any self respecting parent would have spiked that little game from day one.Children are not put on this planet to enjoy themselves. An aged grandparent or really boring aunt should have been drafted in to house sit and prevent the oiks from having any fun at all.
:):):)

The way you lot carry on, its no wonder the younger generation think we're such a load of old fuddy duddy has beens :(

Inceidentally, you said they were lying around in their boxers ...... tad worried by that, was that because they didn't have any birds round or because they did or .......

:-) lol because they did, James girlfriend tried to look as if she had just arrived at the house and the other err young ladies just looked as if they wanted to disappear after a look from SWMBO that needed no translation lol

You should see

See Chichester Marina on a bank holiday......

We saw some fun and games as well yesterday. Not as busy on the river as I would have expected but we saw a cleated bow line in Cookham lock which led to the lock being reversed (and the rope cut!). Also very poor positioning on laybys.

And is there are rule that if you have a bowthruster, you have to use it in every lock instead of driving the boat correctly? Do they stop working if not used once an hour or something?

Ah, Bowthrustaphobia. This has become a recognised psychological disfunction which seems to affect mainly those who haven't got one - but wish they had!! Bet you fought against disc brakes on cars too. You were quite capable of stopping your car without the need for these new-fangled gadgets, weren't you!! :)

Oh dear - someone offended you then?

Oh, BTW, haven't you got twin screws on LG? Both at the back, no doubt. Well, I have two screws as well but one is a lttle tiddly fella at the front that helps me out now again - only when needed, mind, but its very economical, doesn't use any diesel at all, helps me get into (and out of) some VERY tight spaces and makes going backwards an absolute dream. Can't praise it enough - in fact, it comes pretty close to having an extra crew.

Mind you, it does get a bit upset when it sometimes hears its cousins being abused by their owners who haven't attended the BT ante natal classes ...... as they say ...t'aint what you've got, it's the way you use it :D

Just to be clear, bowthrusters are fine and I would certainly have one on that sort of boat. I just hate seeing them being abused by being used as a substitute for putting the boat in roughly the correct position. Particularly on boats that have two perfectly good engines at the back as well.

On the weekend we were following a boat that used lots of revs on both engines and bowthruster at the same time within several locks and merely succeeded in making an odd cacophony of sound without actually doing anything for his positioning.

(Geez, you would think I mentioned Fenders or something!!)

To mention stern thrusters.....
