Apollo's Tubes

Just for anyone that has not fallen asleep......

We were discussing the state of my oil coolers on the boat, specifically the Gearbox oil cooler which as you can see below was a tad blocked with crud.

What is worse is that before the crud hits here it has passed through the water strainer and the turbo intercooler (which is another Heat Exchanger but the water flows across the pipes rather than through them.)

The Intercooler is so bunged up with Mud that I am struggling to remove the stack at the moment and contemplating some chemical assistance...

Only sign of any problem was smell of hot exhaust pipe at high revs, otherwise loads of water out the exhaust and normal temperature on the gauges.

They're just bragging 'cos poor people like you and me can't afford such hi-tech stuff. We have to make do with our Sinclair ZX's and Commodore 64s.

Posh Git!!

I've just got a 4k memory upgrade for my Commodore Pet 2001. :p

wow, Apollo, that filter pic looks like something from a Thai restaurant !

Presumably due to failure of the inlet filter ?

Seem to be in need of a good clear-out .....loads of crud and quite well crusted from the sound of it. Will Cillit Bang help?

Suggestions, on a postcard, please to .........

Thank - you guys, it's been what seems like a long time since I have actually laughed out loud.

Something else you should look at is the impeller in the jabsco, to remove the stack try placing the casting on two or three wooden blocks the tap the stack with a plastic mallet or hammer with a block of wood between the head and the stack, they are at times reluctant to move but will eventually "go" also reversing the job helps, you can scrape away the crud when you have moved it a little, and the tap from the other end makes for easier movement, then do the same on the casing. It's amazing what gets through the so called filters and strainers.

Thanks for the suggestion, have managed to get it to move about 3 inches by clouting it with a rubber mallet and as you say, hitting it back again from the other end is helping.

However - It looks like there is so much crud build up that won't release.

I was contemplating some drain unblocker eg one shot to try and shift it.

Good idea or risky?

If you have it on the move then scrape the inside of the casting, to get as clean as possible, then knock it that way, when it stops reverse the operation, you will succeed, the matrix is quite a strong bit of kit, there are stainless rings around it at 3"/4" intervals, these are what is likely to be holding you.

http://www.ejbowman.co.uk/ you can see the ring in the picture, oil coolers are the same type construction.
