I've had my boat advertised on Apollo Duck for a while now (with little genuine interest). I occasionally get notifications that my contact number has been viewed, indicating that someone is thinking about ringing me. I haven't received any calls and am wondering whether someone is planning a scam. Is this likely?

Surely they just need your number to implement the scam rather than plan it.

Much, much more likely a genuine buyer (or genuine tyre-kicker) thought about ringing but didn't.

To get more genuine interest your best bet is to start a thread mentioning that your boat is for sale on ApolloDuck then post a link. :D

Had the same experience, nothing untoward happened, boat didn't sell either so stuffed it on Ebay with lovely pics and someone bought it after a glass of wine or two...

Is it really all happening on facebook. I don't see that much on yachts and yachty bits. I recon the same principles apply to selling boats as anything else. right product, right place, right price. So if you have something someone is looking for, then you stand a chance of selling it.

If I search for a specific boat, Apollo duck always comes up first. If I wanted a bargain id search facebook.

Sold my boat in three days on Apollo Duck in July, however I cringe when I read some for sale, poor photos and little and many times very poor specification.

Its all about presentation, GOOD recent pictures together with an honest but detailed description, spend a bit of time to make it look good.
Also have you got it in the right section?? IE for me there is a section on motor sailors, and other sections for other types of boats.

Yes I had my contact details but the buyer first contacted me through the Apollo duck site then phoned, it does not take long to find out if they are genuinely interested or tourists:)

There seem to be quite a few posting on selling boat lately, where to advertise it some time depend on boat price, if it's an old cheapy you may be better of on eBay, mid of the range face book , a good condion boat looking to fetch a reasonable prices the yacht market or Apollo duck , although anyone who don't make an effort to take good photo can't expect a good respond, I it's had said this ten times lately, build a good webs site lots of photos and a video and link that to your ad you be surprise the different that make.

I wouldn't had put a phone number on , everyone has internet these days, let the first contact be by email,

That's really good advice Vic. I did that with my last boat, a lot of good quality pictures and a very comprehensive description of the boat and what we'd been doing with her, all on her own web page. Then an ad' on Apollo Duck and any other free/cheap websites i could find, pointing everyone to the web page. The boat was also immaculately presented.

You all seem to be assuming that I placed this post as an advertising stunt. It was a genuine question.
As far as selling is concerned, I'm well aware of the importance of good photos, good description and good price. At the moment my ads have lapsed but I will start again in the new year.
TBH I find the Facebook boats and boaty bits a bit of a pain to belong to as it monopolises my account but I'll try advertising there as well in NY.

I made no such assumption. :)

My advice still stands. Don't waste a load of time with lots of ads, put one good web page up and have lots of quick, small ads pointing to it. This also moves you up the search results on Goggle. When i did my last one, just typing in the boat model brought my web page up on the top few results.
