Has anyone who has bought a Hudl2 tried it with Navionics or similar and proved whether it actually has a proper GPS built in or merely triangulates position from mobile phone masts or some other non GPS technology.. I thought it had GPs but on going to Tesco today to look at one I asked the youth who was selling them from the "Click & Collect" desk if it actually had GPS. His reply was that it did not and needed to be connected to the internet to find its location!

If it does have GPS does it has any function that allows you to see how many satellites it has acquired?

I have just installed GPS Status app on mine and in the back garden it says it has computed the location fix from 12 of the 16 sats it can see.

So I would say it has bona fide GPS and that it works.

The original Hudl definitely has a built in GPS which I've found to be as accurate as a Standard Horizon chartplotter (using MXMariner charts).

Thank you, I did not get that code with my Clubcard statement but have a £9 off when spending £60 voucher so will use that plus all my Clubcard vouchers boosted to double.

Mrs moron wants an ipad for Christmas so my cunning plan is to buy it from tesco, collect points, double them up and buy a hudl2 for me.

Bought mine today. It looks a great bit of kit and once I installed GPS Status software it has proved to have a very good GPS. Screen is very nice and bright so it should be good on board.

I have realised that if you have a question about a tech product it is better to come to a forum first. A little while ago I was wishing to buy a 3G Apple iPad 2 only for the guy on the telephone to say "no it uses the internet to get location" I arrive on forum with the question and response from Apple and everyone laughs and says "it does have GPS"

As for the Hudl 2 I did read it had GPS

Additional question: Is anyone using BT SmartTalk successfully on their HUDL2?

(I ask because I have a cheapo ebay tablet bought brand-new, but although the app downloads and functions fine, BT insist it is 'already registered to an existing BT SmartTalk user'. My suspicion is cloned software!).

I think I got the same problem on my Samsung tab3. I actually contacted BT support line - they said that 'Smart Talk is really only for mobile phones & isn't meant for tablets without a sim card - but it may work!'.

I think its because of the linking process to your bt phone account - You have to specify a phone number to receive a 'pairing number' for your tablet. However, if you have already used the same phone number to link a mobile phone to BT SmartTalk then you get your error msg.

The GPS on my Hudl, or should I call it a Hudl Mk1 now?, has become pretty useless.
It's gone from taking several minutes to acquire in the car, to not acquiring at all, all the way to Devon.
A pity, because it was a nice toy when I first had it.

I love my first generation Nexus 7. Just love it.
And I love it even more now.
I recently bought the Navionics HD app and used it as a visual back up to my charts and sat nav as I sailed across the Thames Estuary. It worked brilliantly. It "found" the location straight away even without Wifi (wifi gives it a localized region to work from) right down to the marina pontoon. It kept pace with me as I sailed from Tollesbury to Hoo Ness.
I thoroughly recommend both the app and a "mini" tablet as a fantastic bit of boat kit.

Take it back, they'll give you a new one.
