Looking on Ebay, i came across one of these: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/OCEAN-SOLOVELA-FEN...1QQcmdZViewItem

Has anyone had any experience with this type of fender? May be something i am interested in after the recent gales and they will also come in handy when friends are onboard.

Not come across them before, and can only find them on mailspeed for £109.00 each plus P&P /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Could grab myself a bargain if they are ok!

Isn't he just drying some sleeping bags?

Not quite those, but similar large flat fenders -- they are very handy up against pilings or any other surface that might otherwise cause a round fender to roll away.

This is the site of the producer:
http://www.oceanfenders.it

have seen some of them around a also a systematic advertising. Good idea, no direct experience; in a critical situazion I'd rather have a Poly F5, but that may be prejudice.
Cheers,
Gianenrico

On the site they are priced 135 €each, VAT included, delivery excluded

Cheers

I would not use them. I had a similar type of fender which had a solid closed cell foam filling which has very little give. my previous boat was quite badly damaged in a storm whilst against a pontoon using these fenders. All the impact was transmitted to the hull rather than being absorbed by the fenders. Result, a lot of gelcoat cracking around the location of the fender and a large repair bill

What pay money for a fender?
You can make good fenders out of old rope.
Take a longish piece of rope and fold in half. Tie the 2 ends together with a reef knot. Follow this with another reef knot and another and another.
When the fender is long enough or the rope has run out, whip the ends together paralell. The top loop is the attachment. Obviously depending on how fat the rope is, how thick the fender is.
Now if you want a wider fender then take 2 pieces of rope or more.
Tie a reef knot in each piece as before then lay the pairs next to one another and tie a reef knot in adjacent legs then revert to the original pair ad infinitum.
You can get ideas from a macrame book or possibly a rope and knot book.
You can make a cover out of sail cloth if you want white and neat.
If you are handy with sewing machine and sail cloth you can also make a long sock type bag into which rolled carpet is fitted. Use indoor outdoor carpet which won't go rotten........ olewill

I am intrigued why you think they will be handy when friends are on-board. You can batter a friend with an ordinary fender just as easily as with one of these, surely? Or do you intend that they sleep on them?
