I have the option of fitting one of these charge regulators to my alternator/battery system, what does anyone think?

I don't have one, but a Balmar regulator would be top of my list if I were to consider fitting a stand-alone regulator. The ARS5 has a host of excellent features, and I'm sure you'd find it to give great results. Obviously, for best performance, you will need to use it as a stand-alone, not in parallel with an existing regulator.

I've ended up with a brand new unit, very cheap (and legal!) and was wondering whether to fit it or sell it. I don't currently have a smart charge regulator and have meant to fit one for a few years, there isn't a lot of point I suppose in selling the one I have then finding a cheap second hand Adverc, Sterling or whatever.

Agree, but fit it as the sole regulator, then it'll give a proper float voltage.
